The new Mortal Kombat 12 teaser trailer dropped today, leaving fans excited and confused. The teaser shows what looks to be a single grain of sand bursting, leaving fans with numerous questions and theories. There is, though, a plausible explanation.
The plot of Mortal Kombat 11 centered around Kronika, the Keeper of Time, and her manipulation of time following the loss of her son. Kronika utilized an Hourglass artifact to accomplish this. However, at the end of the game’s Aftermath DLC, she was no longer alive. The expansion culminated with either Shang Tsung or Liu Kang seizing possession of the Hourglass in order to usher in a “New Era” and a new chronology.
The Mortal Kombat 12 teaser indicates that the events from Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath will continue, although there are no known specifics. It’s possible that the new game may accept one of the expansion’s endings as canon or that it will start with a whole different chronology. The formal announcement of Mortal Kombat 12 will include more information, and fans are eager to see what new features the venerable series has in store for them.

For many years, the Mortal Kombat franchise has been a fan favorite for everyone, and with the success of the most recent game, a new part was eagerly anticipated. Fans were left wondering whether NetherRealm’s next project would be a new Mortal Kombat game 12 or Injustice 3 or something entirely different.
Fortunately, Mortal Kombat 12 creator Ed Boon confirmed via Twitter that the studio’s next game would be one of two options and dropped the teaser for Mortal Kombat 12, confirming the next entry in the franchise.
Later on in the video, a Warner Bros. Discovery executive revealed that Mortal Kombat 12 was already in the works. Rumors say that further details about the game might be released later this month, but nothing has been verified.
