Ubisoft is developing a new system that uses generative AI to create more dynamic and interactive NPCs. Dubbed NEO NPC, the new tech allows for more natural, voice-driven conversations between players and NPCs beyond the pre-determined dialog trees.
Revealed at this year’s GDC, NEO NPC is currently in its prototype stages and is being co-created by narrative directors and data scientists. In the announcement blog, Ubisoft called it a “hugely collaborative effort across artistic and scientific disciplines”.
Unlike regular generative AI models, NEO NPC won’t generate robotic-sounding content. Instead, the system will be preconditioned to work within the creative bounds set by the writers so as to not disrupt the tone of any given scenario. The AI will build upon the character framework laid down by narrative designers and stick to the predefined traits, conversation style, and backstory.
NEO NPC also has filters that safeguard it against inappropriate and toxic inputs from the player. The team is also taking steps to ensure the model is free of any bias and stereotypes. Additionally, the post mentions actors still playing a major part in character creation, which means there’s a lot of human input and intervention going into the system.
The company clarified that NEO NPC has a long way to go before being implemented on a larger scale. Ubisoft is aiming to make it a flexible tool that’s accessible to everyone, not just AAA developers.
