In a detailed financial report released today, Sony stated that by the end of March 24, the cumulative unit sales for PS5 reached 59.2 million units. The number of units sold for the last quarter of the financial year was 4.5 million, taking the total units sold for the full financial year FY23 to 20.8 million.
Interestingly, the report also mentioned that as we enter the second half of the console cycle, the number of PS5 units sold is expected to decline gradually, and we have estimated the PS5 sales for FY24 to be at approximately 18 million units.
The report also touched upon the performance of Helldivers 2, with sales at 12 million units for PS5 and PC put together within three months of launch, more than what God Of War: Ragnarok achieved in the same time period after its launch in 2022.
Another interesting set of numbers to take from the report is that while the number of active users on PS in March grew by 9% year on year, the total playtime grew by 15%, which means that each person who bought a PS5 is spending more time on the console than what was the case a year back.
This can possibly be attributed to the strong release calendar for PS5 games and live service games like Helldivers 2. The fact that Sony is looking at Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Concord – both being live service games also kind of reinforces the increasing attractiveness of this genre to PS5 players
