While Capcom is busy apologizing for the performance issues and microtransactions in Dragon’s Dogma 2, there’s a new rumor about the next main Resident Evil title. Popular leaker Dusk Golem claimed in an X post that Resident Evil 9 will feature an open world.
Dusk Golem has backed this claim with an interesting pattern Capcom has been following lately. The leaker pointed out that the Japanese publisher applies new initiatives to three titles at a time, and there are several examples to solidify this theory.
First, Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry 5 were greenlit quite close together, and all of them used the new RE Engine developed by Capcom. The RE:2 remake also led to the company commissioning RE:3 and RE:4 remakes.
Capcom then improved the RE Engine to build the open world in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This leads Dusk Golem to predict that Capcom’s next two games, Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil 9 will improve upon the open-world functionality.
The leaker ended their post by mentioning that Resident Evil 9 would “retain the series DNA”, which would be good news for fans. However, none of this has been officially confirmed.
Previously, Resident Evil 9 has been rumored to have the biggest budget in the series so far. The game is expected to be released in 2025.
