Originally released in 2018, Sea of Thieves has amassed an impressive player base of 40 million (and counting).
The milestone was announced by Rare’s executive producer Joe Neate. Celebrating the achievement in an official blog post, Neate wrote,
“40 million players across Xbox, Windows 10 and Steam is an amazing milestone to be able to talk about…”
Sea of Thieves became the first-ever day one release on the Game Pass service, which is certainly a major contributor to the 40-million feat. Back in 2020, this number was around 15 million, so clearly the game is still keeping players very much hooked.
A six-year-old game performing this well is perhaps one of the reasons why Xbox decided to port it to PlayStation. Sea of Thieves, upon its PS5 launch on April 30, 2024, will become Rare’s first ever game in its 39-year history to release on PlayStation.
Mentioning the PS release of Sea of Thieves, Jon Neate said,
“I’m also excited about getting to expand our community even further, as we’re just days away from launching on PlayStation®5 and introducing a whole new plethora of pirates to our shared world. The positivity and excitement coming out of our Closed Beta was infectious, and I can’t wait for even more fresh faces to arrive starting next week.”
Sea of Thieves on PS5 will support crossplay with Xbox, which would breathe new life into the title and rapidly expand its player count by a huge margin. The pirate-themed co-op multiplayer game is also set to receive its 12th season soon.
