In the tweet celebrating the feat, the official Japanese Street Fighter Twitter also mentioned that the entire series has now passed 50 million copies sold.
In a statement made last week prior to the latest title’s launch, Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto revealed that the company’s objective is to achieve sales of 10 million copies for Street Fighter 6 throughout its lifespan. Going by the current trend, the latest mainline entry should comfortably reach that number soon. To put it into perspective, Street Fighter 5, which faced significant controversy upon its release, took approximately six weeks to sell 1.4 million copies. Street Fighter 4, on the other hand, sold over 3 million copies in six weeks.
During a recent interview with Famitsu, Tsujimoto expressed the company’s desire to elevate the Street Fighter series to new heights by expanding its scope and appealing to a broader audience. He stated that the company’s ultimate goal is to make SF6 the top-selling game in the franchise. From the numbers announced today, it seems everything is going according to Capcom’s plans.
On day one of its launch, Street Fighter 6 became the first paid fighting game in Steam to amass more than 70 thousand concurrent players. All of these bode well not only for the longevity of the Street Fighter franchise but also for the future of the fighting games genre as a whole.
Street Fighter 6 is out on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
