Windblown is Dead Cells-maker Motion Twin’s next game slated for early access launch on PC in 2024. Announced in The Game Awards 2023, it’s another fast-paced roguelite action platformer, but unlike Dead Cells, it will feature co-op with up to three players besides its single-player mode.
The announcement trailer for Windblown showcases bits of gameplay mixed with some zany animation, all put together by French adult animation studio Bobbypills.
As shown in the trailer, Windblown employs 3D visuals from the top-down perspective. This is quite a departure in terms of perspective from the 2D sidescrolling structure of Dead Cells—Motion Twin’s previous game that put the French indie studio on the map.
Windblown employs vibrant colors and a stylized cel-shaded artstyle to accompany its high-octane action gameplay.
“We were craving a lightning-fast combat roguelite, but it simply didn’t exist,” Motion Twin shared. “So, we rolled up our sleeves and crafted the game we yearned for; one that lets us dive into the action on our own, and with friends, whenever the mood (or too much pain) strikes!”
The animated trailer shows players wielding blades and shields going head to head against mechanized bats, warrior lizards, and axolotls on levitating platforms. If one had to guess, learning the attack and movement patterns of the different enemies would be the name of the game.
Beating them will bolster your arsenal with new abilities, stat boosts, and more for the duration of your current run—something you’d expect out of any roguelite game. Since it’s a roguelite and not a roguelike, we expect permanent upgrades that will persist throughout our future runs, but we are not sure yet what those will be.
Windblown is coming out on PC in early access sometime in 2024.
