[Updated 29th July, 2025 to reflect the latest hits in this genre for the current year]
Even though Sony pioneered one of its most popular consoles ten years ago, the PlayStation 4 continues to dominate the gaming market. Especially in the horror category, where it offers some of the most horrifying titles available. Despite PS5’s current popularity, the last-gen console still boasts an outstanding game collection.
The top PS4 horror games, ranging from contemporary masterpieces to timeless oldies, take you on unforgettable experiences. We compiled a list of such games for you to try out.
Little Nightmares (2017)

Little Nightmares’ bleak and menacing story is heavily influenced by vintage side-scrolling games like Limbo. With terrifying monsters lurking around every corner and creepiness being an overarching theme, you must use stealth and silence to get through the dreamlike experience. You’ll have to go through challenging puzzles while controlling Six, a girl styled in a raincoat, in order to survive the dangers that lie around.
Little Nightmares is one of the scariest PS4 games, despite having a modest and perhaps deceptive aesthetic design that manages to evoke a degree of dread unsurpassed by other horror titles.
Until Dawn (2015)

Until Dawn is a carefully written thriller with elements of horror lying at its very core. You are entrusted with rescuing a group of adolescents whose icy spring break hideaway is being terrorized by a crazed killer. Add to that a degree of ghostly creatures and horrific events from the past, this game tests your decision-making abilities and reflexes.
The psychological horror component in Until Dawn elevates the game from a simple murder investigation to one that deals with challenging subjects of mental health, making it considerably frightening.

Alan Wake Remastered (2021)

This popular title is one of the top PS4 horror games of all time. Alan Wake delves into its protagonist’s psyche as well as the terrifying world he is a part of. You’ll be confronted with a scenario that will test both their technical and mental fortitude as you investigate this world.
The gloomy mood of Alan Wake is intensified with updated visuals in the 2021 remaster, making for a more engrossing and unsettling experience. Even though the upcoming Alan Wake 2 is officially the ‘first Remedy Entertainment survival horror game’, Alan Wake is undoubtedly not for the faint of heart.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (2017)

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice remains one of the darkest and most unsettling video games in recent memory. It’s an exploration of the fractured mind of Senua, a Celtic warrior battling the Norse Gods to win back her lover. She will face demons as she sinks down into her own version of hell.
Players will have to deal with a dissonance of ‘voices in their heads’ as well as deceptive illusions that blur the line between what is real and what is Senua’s creation. As a result, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is among the best horror games on PS4. At the same time, it also offers a tragic love tale, which strangely heightens the intensity of the experience.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard (2017)

Biohazard’s bizarre story explores the life of the Baker family, who have superhuman strength and eccentric, terrifying traits. They also happen to have a ferocious desire to murder the main character, Ethan Winters. RE7 was the first game in the series to use a first-person viewpoint that maximizes the horror factor.
You are forced to experience the bloody atrocities of the game more intimately than ever before since you are put directly into the protagonist’s shoes. The best that Ethan can do to protect himself from these terrifying creatures is run and hide, making Resident Evil 7 one of the top PS4 horror games and a candidate for being the scariest in the illustrious franchise.
Alien Isolation (2014)

Alien Isolation effectively makes use of the horror gaming potential of the lonesome, icy, and unexplored vastness of space. The narrative follows Amanda Ripley as she searches for her lost mother on a space station and runs into a ferocious Xenomorph.
The game requires players to survive on their own, with Amanda receiving only infrequent assistance from crew members. As you try to avoid the Xenomorph, your sole resources are a motion tracker, torch, the occasional use of a weapon, and of course, your own sanity. Everything combined, the almost decade-old game still stands out as one of the best horror games on PS4.

Layers Of Fear (2016)

Layers of Fear takes you on a journey through the mind of a strange painter whose only ambition is to complete his greatest masterpiece. On the contrary, the story is anything but lighthearted and peaceful. Instead, in this psychological horror experience, you will witness the protagonist’s own terrible history unfold before their very eyes, and it will frequently be hard to distinguish between truth and illusion.
The mood of the game is its greatest asset, as gloomy lighting, unpleasant music, and trippy images gradually paint the scene.
Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019)

The famous title was given new life by the remake, which also included new voice actors, language, and scenes to complete the experience. It was an instant success, much like the more recent Resident Evil 4 remake, and it is widely regarded as a masterpiece in both the franchise and the video game industry.
A teenage Leon S. Kennedy encounters the zombie outbreak for the first time in Raccoon City in the Resident Evil 2 remake, which sticks closely to the storyline of the original film from 1998. The 2019 game, however, distinguishes itself as the peak of cinematic survival horror as a result of its upgrades, and thus is a sure contender in the list of the top PS4 horror games.
Outlast (2014)

Outlast is one of the most minutely designed video games in the horror genre. It depicts the story of a brave journalist who enters a mental institution only to get imprisoned and hunted by inmates who have been subjected to forced experiments because of an insane doctor. You must escape their wrath rather than engage in battle, hence your stealthiness is the key to survival.
And if that weren’t bad enough, the only light source in the completely dark institution will be your camera’s night vision function. Mind you, this camera runs on batteries that deplete quite quickly.
Dying Light 2 (2022)

Leaning more on action and parkour than perhaps any of the other games on the list, the one reason for including the game here is the brilliant way it captures the day and night routine, and the frantic rush of making it back to a Shelter against a timer. Few other games have managed to capture that nerve-wrecking tension and adrenaline spikes the way this has been executed in Dying Light 2.
Released in 2022 for all platforms, the game builds on the events of the first one and features a new protagonist and setting. You play as Aiden Caldwell, and the action takes place in Villedor, a city mapped 4 times bigger than that in the first game. The emphasis on parkour is clear, as the developers had more than 3000 parkour animations depending on the environment at hand.
Silent Hill 2 Remake (2024)

A faithful remake of the classic that made the Silent Hill franchise what it is today, this one, like in the original, has you play as James Sunderland who makes his way to Silent Hill, Maine in search of his wife: even though she is deceased, you see, he has received a letter from her that says that she is waiting for him there in that town.
Silent Hill 2 Remake launched in 2024, and the developers received praise from critics and the gaming community for making just the right amount of changes while keeping the look and feel of the original as it is: for e.g., a better third-person view with overhauled combat. The game went on to become a commercial success as well, selling a million units within the first four days of release.
