Step into the role of Zagreus, the son of Hades, who is tired of his stifling existence in the Underworld. He flees his castle and reaches the surface, resenting his princely responsibilities and inattentive father. To do that, he must first navigate the four hazardous areas between him and the open air above. Undoubtedly, his trip will be complicated and fraught with tragedy as he repeatedly attempts to get a little further. Fortunately, it’s not an issue for a god of the Underworld to keep dying and returning home.
The godly adventure, with its fierce combat and fantastic storytelling, is as good as you’ve heard. It’s a superbly designed game that excels in almost every area. Hades is undoubtedly one of the best roguelike games to add to your PS5 collection.
8. Resident Evil 4 Remake (2023)
Action/Adventure/Horror | Metacritic Score: 93
Image via Capcom
Leon’s journey in an infected world is a memorable one. The classic title had an unexpected rendition wrapped in a modern taste. Remaking Resident Evil 4 (one of the greatest Resident Evil games ever) was a risk, but happily, it paid off well.
The original is still fundamental in every way, but Capcom updates it to match more modern games in terms of appearance and feel. Along with the legendary characters and all the familiar claustrophobic combat, it’s also one of the greatest PS5 games you can play now.
7. Last of Us Part 2 (2020)
Action/Adventure/Open Zone | Metacritic Score: 93
Image via PlayStation Studios
The controversial sequel to The Last of Us Part I follows a horrifying and vengeful tale set in a world fans are familiar with. Despite the criticism for certain narrative choices and storytelling, The Last of Us Part II is a stunning game with gameplay that tests the might of modern gaming capabilities.
Despite its gore and carnage, it’s a magnificent game, with recreations of post-apocalyptic Seattle and Santa Barbara that are amazing in detail and grandeur. This game has lush, beautiful, horrifying, and horrific visuals and sounds. The Last Of Us Part II undoubtedly ranks among the top games of the generation in terms of presentation and art direction.
6. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)
Action/Adventure/RPG/Open World | Metacritic Score: 94
Image via CD Projekt
Geralt’s monster-slaying journey takes new heights on modern consoles. Compared to the PS4 version, starting up the new rendition of the game is like starting a brand-new adventure.
The game runs in performance mode at 60 frames per second (60FPS) with upscaling to 4K resolution, and it looks lavish while performing reliably and smoothly.
You’re in for a massive treat if you’re unfamiliar with the game. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt follows Geralt’s quest for someone unique to the overarching narrative. You’ll begin his story with his tutor Vesemir, brushing off monster-hunting skills (which may or may not help in battling humans). The lengthy, twisting plot takes several hours to complete, but it is brilliantly told and features many fascinating characters across the game world.
5. Demon Souls (2020)
Action/Adventure/Open Zone | Metacritic Score: 92
Image via Bandai Namco
FromSoftware’s humble origins took a beautiful rendition. Demon Souls has been their first attempt at crafting a meticulous blend of one-of-its-kind gameplay and exploration. The 2009 cult favorite has been updated for the 4K era and is one of the PS5’s best-looking titles.
Many quality-of-life changes, as well as detailing, have been updated. Things such as motion capture, texturing, and music are all brand-new. While the original mechanics and charm of its storytelling have been well-preserved, have also been some adjustments made. This includes new items, armor, an arsenal, and a reduced quantity of healing grass you can carry. Along with this, new consumable ‘Grains’ provide benefits while exploring.
4. Last of Us Part 1 – Remake (2022)
Action/Adventure | Metacritic Score: 88
Image via PlayStation Studios
A story that has been told countless times. Yet, the Last of Us Part 1 remains evergreen in the history of video games. With PS5’s latest hardware, Naughty Dog claimed the potential to make their magnum opus shine even brighter. With updated mechanics, enhanced controls, and completely new graphics, the remake of Joel and Ellie’s Adventure was created utilizing the studio’s most recent PS5 engine. If this is your first time playing The Last of Us, you’re in for an absolute treat. The show’s world and storytelling also carry over to the widespread adaption by HBO.
3. God of War Ragnarok (2022)
Action/Adventure/Open Zone | Metacritic Score: 94
Image via PlayStation Studios
The series departed from its traditional beginnings with God of War (2018). We stepped into the world of Norse mythology, with Kratos going on a journey that would alter the workings of reality. More so, the trip was integral to his relationship with Atreus, as they faced a problematic evolution across different elements. Fatherhood, Gods, and Purpose, to name a few.
God of War Ragnarok is an excellent way to wrap up Kratos’ Norse narrative. You will reunite with Atreus, Mimir, and other friends. The combat mechanics have a remarkable progression, and the incredible exploration remains. The plot packs a powerful emotional punch, which includes some thoughtful puzzles.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)
Action/Adventure/Open World | Metacritic Score: 97
Image via Rockstar Games
Many consider Red Dead Redemption 2 one of the best video games ever. Rockstar’s magnum opus is a technical marvel and the benchmark for open-world storytelling in video games. RDR2’s world sprawls over a giant landscape covering every weather condition, wildlife, and terrain you can imagine. The PlayStation 5’s ability to capture all of it is truly remarkable.
The trees, wildlife around you, and NPCs that have routines – every aspect of this world feels alive. This is something that makes RDR2 a brilliant open-world game.
The game explores the character motivations of people who matter to the game’s larger narrative and little side-quests that may seem less important. The characters will remain in your memories long after you’re done interacting with them. Even though their trajectories are predetermined, Arthur Morgan, John Marsten, Sadie, Dutch, and other colorful individuals have complicated dynamics that are constantly shifting and changing.
1. Elden Ring (2022)
Action/Adventure/Open World/RPG | Metacritic Score: 96
Image via Bandai Namco
Elden Ring is the perfect entry for those who have never touched a FromSoftware game. And for age-old fans, it’s an absolute treat.
We loved the combat from Sekiro. We adored the exploration in Bloodborne. We fell in love with Dark Soul’s storytelling. And somehow, Elden Ring tops all these games by cleverly blending in the most remarkable aspects of what worked fell in FromSoftware’s previous games.
Elden Ring will have you explore a vast world of mysteries, surprises, and brutality. The punishment may feel less severe – thanks to brilliantly complimented co-op and friendly AI features. However, there’s no absolute linear progression to the game. You can explore as you wish and brave uncharted territories as you like. Elden Ring is nothing short of a masterpiece.
These are our top picks for the best PS5 games you can enjoy right now. We will keep updating this list as more awesome games join the PS library.
