Elves and dwarves have been going at it for years, and their ancient rivalry continues in Dragon’s Dogma 2. However, there might be room for an uneasy friendship of sorts. You make an attempt to broker that peace when you activate a side quest called The Ailing Arborheart.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 – How to Activate and Clear The Ailing Arborheart
You can first access Sacred Arbor, the hidden village of the elves, starting fairly early in the game. The easiest way to get there is to meet an elf in front of the weapons shop in Vernworth and buy him a bow. That act of generosity leads to the Gift of the Bow quest, which leads to A Trial of Archery. After you clear the second of those quests, you must talk to Doireann to activate The Ailing Arborheart.
Doireann is elven royalty. After you rescue her, you’ll find her standing near the center of the main area within Sacred Arbor. When I approached her, she had no idea who I was. That was disappointing, after I carried her all over the place to take her to safety in the previous quest. In her defense, she was unconscious at the time.

When I met Doireann after rescuing her, I had to carry on the conversation while following her along a walkway to a platform where she viewed the Aborheart. Any time you visit Sacred Arbor, you may have trouble making sense out of a lot of what the residents say. Fortunately, Doireann speaks human. Less fortunately, she doesn’t know quite all of the right words.
As the quest activates, your first order of business is to determine the meaning of the word “gwyfencha.” If you have someone in your party who can translate elvish, you’ll immediately recognize that the word is a reference to scalecinder. Otherwise, you’ll need to find a translator pawn. That, or you can teach your pawn the Woodland Wordsmith specialization. I had already done that by this point.
After you figure out what Doireann needs, the next step is to travel to Battahli. If you’ve already been there, great. If not, you may have to advance the plot a bit. Specifically, you need to clear the Nation of the Lambent Flame quest.
When you visit Battahl now, make sure you have The Ailing Arborheart active as your current quest. The map marker leads you directly to the chamber where you meet a blacksmith, Brokkr. See the chamber’s location in the above map screenshot. Brokkr doesn’t have much to say, but talk to his nearby assistant to complete the quest. That conversation automatically activates the next quest in the line: Out of the Forest, Into the Forge.
