As the Arisen, you spend your time in Dragon’s Dogma 2 helping various non-playable characters deal with the hand life has dealt them. One character you meet early in the adventure is especially important. His name is Sven, and he is making a pest of himself in the capital city. He is the source of the optional quest, The Ornate Box.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 – How to Activate and Complete The Ornate Box
When you first meet Sven, you have just arrived in the capital city of Vernworth. You leave a meeting with Officer Brant just in time to witness an apparent street urchin running from a guard named Norman. The guard wants you to help tell him where the boy has gone. You should lie, which impresses the boy. He doesn’t offer his optional quest just then, however. To activate The Ornate Box quest, you must assist Sven when he meets with a merchant, Auriol.
Auriol’s stall is located near the city wall. The first time you encounter him, he may recognize you if you helped his granddaughter. In the earlier Medicament Predicament quest, you may have helped her acquire some medicine. When you meet Auriol now, the young lady will hand you the valuable item, Chirurgeon’s Tome. Her grandfather also offers you a discount at his shop. If you didn’t complete the prior quest, you simply won’t get the item or the discount.

Pay attention at Auriol’s stall. There should be a second scene. If you don’t witness it on your first visit to the area, make sure to wander through again soon. In the scene, you should see a boy arguing with Auriol. The boy is Sven, who you last saw running from Norman. He wants to purchase an item and he swears he has the gold, but he can’t show it. At that point, you can talk to Sven where he stands against a nearby wall. He will then ask you for the money to buy the item. The idea is that he will pay you back. This is not a promise he intends to break. It takes some time, but he will make good on his debt. However, you can also answer “Methinks not” to decline his request. Then you can buy the item from Auriol yourself. Once you buy it, hand it over to Sven and save yourself 200 G.
Once Sven has the box, The Ornate Box quest activates. Sven leaves the area. You can meet him again at the fountain in the city square to hear some of his backstory. At the time of each meeting, he also will reward you. There will be three such visits.
Each visit is separated by an in-game day or two. You might use that time to tend to other optional activities and find him at the fountain as the days pass. Or, you can pass time at the Stardrop Inn overlooking the square, where you sometimes meet Officer Brant in the evening. Just head to the counter and choose to Pass Time, a few hours at a whack.
After you listen to the last of the conversations with Sven, you will have made back your investment. In my case, since I gave him the money for the box, he paid me back the 1000G. I have heard that if you visit him after giving him the box as a gift, he hands over valuable items instead. For that reason, I suggest that you buy the box and hand it over to Sven, rather than loaning him the money to buy it himself.
One word of caution: if you advance the plot too quickly, without first tending to The Ornate Box, you may be locked out of completing it. You need to meet with Sven all three times to hear his backstory at the fountain, and to get all of your rewards. During the final meeting with Sven near the fountain, you receive the Courtly Tunic and Courtly Breeches, along with 4000 G and 900 XP. Make sure that you do not sell the items Sven gives you, because you can use them to help clear an upcoming story quest.
