There are two main ways to obtain Refined Carbon in Abiotic Factor: scavenging specific machines and farming through exchangers. Both methods become more accessible as you progress toward the Cascade Laboratories and deeper zones, such as the Adjustment Wing.
Breaking Carbon Analysis Machines
Carbon Analysis Machines are one of the first reliable sources of Refined Carbon. These blue-and-white machines appear across sections like the Adjustment Wing on Level 3 and in areas leading toward Rise. Destroying them drops the item directly, and you’ll come across several as you move through these story-critical areas.
These drops help initially, but they are limited. So, once it is cleared, you will need another source to keep crafting gear that requires carbon.
Using Refined Carbon Exchangers
The best long-term method is through Refined Carbon Exchangers. These machines trade Silver Scrap for Refined Carbon, giving you an effectively infinite supply as long as you can keep finding silver.
One exchanger is located near the Adjustment Wing’s main lobby. To reach it, follow the laboratory’s tunnel until you see a blood trail leading to a staircase. Head up, and you’ll find the exchanger inside the Cellular Lab. Each piece of Silver Scrap you deposit converts into one Refined Carbon.
You can also craft Refined Carbon in Abiotic Factor by scrapping Lumps of Coal. However, the exchanger method is far more efficient for large quantities.

How to farm Silver Scrap for Refined Carbon in Abiotic Factor
Since exchangers rely entirely on Silver Scrap, farming this material becomes the real focus. The most reliable farming route involves the Train portal in the world of Manufacturing West. Here’s how you can reach the Train:
- Head to the northwest tram station in Manufacturing West.
- Enter the Train portal world, which is guarded by soldiers.
- Search every cabin and check under tables for silverware and Pocket Watches.
Silverware can be collected directly as Silver Scrap, while Pocket Watches can be broken down into Exquisite Chains. From there, you can salvage for more Silver Scrap.
The key advantage here is that portal worlds like the Train reset every few in-game days, allowing you to revisit and farm materials repeatedly. Keep in mind that Exquisite Chains are also used for trinkets, so decide carefully whether to scrap them or save them for crafting.
