The “Retrieve Essential Personnel” mission In Helldivers 2 requires you to defend and rescue the science team stuck in the emergency bunker surrounded by enemies. While the quest might not seem that challenging, defending the staff can be a hassle if you’re not properly geared up.
How Do I Rescue Science Teams In Helldivers 2?
To rescue the science teams in Helldivers 2, choose the Retrieve Essential Personnel mission from the missions terminal and then select a loadout.
Here are some suggestions for the loadout:
- Eagle 500KG Bomb
- A/M-12 Mortar Sentry
- A/G-16 Gatling Sentry
- Orbital Railcannon Strike
- Grenade Launcher
- Machine Gun
- Orbital Gatling Barrage
Once the mission starts, immediately put down one of the Sentry near the drop-off zone and one near the bunker gates. Then head to the emergency bunker gate which has a green light glowing on top to release the science team members three at a time.
You also have to look out for Bot Ships dropping enemies to eliminate the facility staff. So, if you ever spot a ship glowing red in the sky, immediately attack and use your Strikes and Bombs to take it down.

To successfully complete this mission, you need to defend 30 staff members and escort them to their destination, which can be a bit tedious. If you want to be more efficient and rescue them quickly, focus on destroying the enemy ships and let your mission partner do the rescue.
Note: The mission difficulty will determine the number of enemies you have to face in it. Higher difficulty means more aliens to fight.
However, if you are solo-running this task, focus on rescuing 3 at a time. Also, remember that you cannot open the emergency bunker gate if it is yellow. You have to wait until it turns green to rescue more staff.
After all the 30 science team members are rescued, defend the extraction zone till the emergency shuttle arrives to complete the mission.
This mission also gives you a chance to collect samples for ship upgrades.
