Many players are confused whether Granblue Fantasy Relink is a sequel, a spin-off, or merely a port of the original Granblue Fantasy. The answer isn’t completely straightforward though.
Is Granblue Fantasy Relink A Sequel To Granblue Fantasy Mobile?
While not a sequel, Granblue Fantasy: Relink can be described as a spin-off of the original Granblue Fantasy. For the uninitiated, Granblue Fantasy is an extremely popular mobile game. This free-to-play mobile title has been around for over ten years, but it was never officially released outside Japan.
Granblue Fantasy is a gacha game that focuses on character interactions. It has also spawned a couple of spin-offs, the most popular being the fighting game, Granblue Fantasy Versus.
Granblue Fantasy Relink, on the other hand, is an ambitious RPG. It introduces players to most of the cast that could be originally found in Granblue Fantasy. Relink “loosely” features the same story as the original mobile game. However, since the mobile game has been around for a decade, it has received copious amounts of content and narrative arcs.
Granblue Fantasy Relink establishes the world and characters of the original game and introduces a new story. The main focus is to introduce characters and the world. Both the games essentially start from the same point – the protagonist, living on a sky island, crosses paths with a mysterious girl. While protecting the girl, Lyria, from soldiers of an evil empire, the protagonist gets hurt. This prompts Lyria to merge her soul with the protagonist and merged, these one body-two souls (literally) adventurers set off to find the origin of Lyria’s mysterious powers.
Relink features a self-contained adventure that has bits and pieces of the original game’s content. It takes place in the same universe as the original and the fighting game. The main objective of Relink seems to be introducing Western audiences and PlayStation & PC gamers to this extremely popular gaming franchise. Hopefully, the developers will keep expanding the narrative arc of Relink slowly, offering players more and more content from the original game in a new format.
That being said, Granblue Fantasy Relink features a delightful story that can be enjoyed on its own. The original game does a better job of exploring the game’s massive lore, but Relink presents a self-contained opportunity to enter and explore Sky Realm.
