In SteamWorld Build, you are tasked with creating a self-sustaining town in a harsh desert environment. But under these unforgiving lands lies a treasure trove of minerals and other resources that can help your town prosper. To exploit these resources, you will need to build and use Workshops and Extractors.
So in this guide below, we will explain everything that you need to know about SteamWorld Build Workshops and Extractors.
How To Access Underground Mines In SteamWorld Build
Workshops and Extractors in SteamWorld Build can only be placed in the underground mines. For this, you will first need to repair the Abandoned Mineshaft so that you can access the underground areas. Here are the requirements for it:
- Boards x8
- Money x1200
- Engineers x18
- Train Station
From these requirements, you should first focus on getting the Train Station up and running which also requires Boards. You can make a Lumber Mill and have Foresters produce Boards, then put down some Engineering Housing until you have 18 Engineers or more.
Finally, you will just need to save up 1200 Money and you can now repair the Abandoned Mineshaft to access the underground caves and start constructing SteamWorld Build Workshops and Extractors.
How To Build Workshops In SteamWorld Build
Workshops are the center of Machine production in SteamWorld Build. Unlike on the surface, Workshops don’t work as singular buildings; instead, they are placed as singular tiles. The number of tiles in a Workshop will determine how many Extractors you can have.
To build a Workshop, you will need to have an empty location in the underground mines where you can place it, a central location is advised. Here are the resources you will need for each tile of Workshop in SteamWorld Build:
- Boards x1
- Tools x1
- Money x300
You will need to build a Workshop with at least nine tiles to meet the requirement for building your first Extractor. Increasing the number of Workshop tiles later will allow you to expand the number of Extractors you can have.
Keep in mind that you will also need to put down Miner Quarters for miners that can clear out the dirt to open up space and Prospector Quarters that can collect and deposit the resources from the Workshops.

How To Build Extractors In SteamWorld Build
SteamWorld Build Workshops and Extractors go hand in hand with each other, once you have your Workshop functioning, you will need to place down the Mechanic Quarters. This will add Mechanics to your workforce that can install and repair Extractors.
Now, you need to discover resource veins for things like Scrap, Dirty Water, Ironium, etc. Each resource has its own type of Extractor but since Scrap is the first resource you will likely find, let’s take that as the example.
Once you find your Scrap Vein on one of the tiles in the underground mines, simply select the Scrap Extractor from the building menu and place it next to it. It should be accessible to the general area that you have dug out and also have an accessible path to your Mechanic Quarters.
After this has been set up, it’s an automated process from here as the Extractor will do its job while the workers will ensure it’s maintained. The resources will automatically be sent back up to the surface for your use.
