Whether you juggle between different save games and want to back them up as caution, or you want to switch between Game Pass and Steam, you need to know where the Starfield saves are located on your PC. Here is everything you need to know.
Starfield Saves Location For Steam Users
Those of you who own Starfield on Steam will find your saves in this directory: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Saves
. Here, you’ll find individual files for each character, named with a combination of numbers and timestamps.
Starfield Saves Location For Game Pass Users
Things are a bit trickier in this case. You need to navigate to this location in your PC to locate your Starfield save game files if you play the game through Game Pass: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_3275kfvn8vcwc\SystemAppData\wgs\
.
However, Starfield savefiles on Game Pass are in an encrypted format. That means, if you buy the game on Steam following your Game Pass tryout, you can not readily transfer your savefiles to the Steam savefile location and carry on from where you left off.
How To Make Starfield Game Pass Saves Work On Steam
To convert the encrypted savefiles (located in the Game Pass save location mentioned above) to carry over to your Steam copy of Starfield, you need to use an open-source tool called the XGP Save Extractor. The tool features support for a lot of other games other than Starfield. So, keep it around if you usually try out games in Microsoft’s subscription service and eventually buy them on Steam.
