Sony has announced that their latest accessibility controller will be named the PS5 Access Controller. Previously known as Project Leonardo, this controller aims to improve the experience for gamers with disabilities by providing options to customize the controller according to their needs. This is a huge step by Sony in its ongoing mission to help make gaming more accessible.
Although Sony has not mentioned the price of the device, here is all we know about the PS5 Access Controller.
PS5 Access Controller features
Controller customization
The PS5 Access Controller includes swappable buttons and stick caps, allowing players to create layouts based on their individual strength, range of motion, and physical needs. It offers three types of analog stick caps and button caps in various shapes and sizes. This lets players decide where they would like each button to be according to their convenience.
Players can also attach the controller to AMPS mounts and tripods to have it at the right height for ease of use. More ergonomic measures have been taken that allow the controller to be used in different orientations, such as laying it flat or in a 360-degrees orientation.
The PS5 Access Controller also features four 3.5mm AUX ports for attaching custom switches, buttons, and analog sticks for further customizations.
User Interface (UI) and customization
The PS5 has an in-depth user interface that allows disabled gamers to customize every option of the Access Controller. Players can connect up to two Access Controllers and one DualSense (or DualSense Edge) pad together, forming a single set of buttons.
Sony also allows players to fine-tune the starting position and sensitivity of input, as well as adjust deadzones and stick sensitivity for better motor control during gameplay. All this will be customizable from the accessibility menu of the PS5.
Commitment to accessibility
Sony releases a video showcasing its dedication to accessibility, with Mark Friend (Accessibility Lead), Kazuhiro Yanase (Product Manager), Alvin Daniel (Sr. Technical Program Manager) from Sony along with a few other prominent names in the gaming industry discussing their mission to make games more accessible.
Sony promises to share more details about the PS5 Access Controller, including product and release information, in the coming months. A registration page is available for those interested in receiving the latest news about the Access Controller via email.
