How To Fight Better In Lords Of The Fallen

Combat is a very important aspect of Soulslike RPGs which mainly focuses on your ability to defeat their challenging enemies and bosses. While Lords Of The Fallen takes inspiration from many Souls games and incorporates some of the well-known fighting styles recognized by veterans, it also adds some new and interesting features to keep you on your toes.

Your primary weapons, spells, and throwable items combined with perfect blocks and dodges make up most of the combat for the game. Most common fighting moves like blocking, dodging, and parrying can also be accompanied by some twists added by the game to spice up your battle.

If you’re looking for a guide that summarizes all the combat tips for Lords of the Fallen, then look no further. Here are all the tips and tricks you need to progress in the game.

Light And Charged Attacks With Melee

Each starting class in Lords of the Fallen comes with its own specialized melee weapons. These swords/staffs/daggers can be used to attack enemies either with one-tap light attacks or by charging them up for a heavier hit. The charged attacks deal more damage but deplete your endurance a.k.a. stamina much faster.

You can also dodge incoming attacks and combo them up with an attack of your own. Sprint jumping onto enemies with a weapon will also count as a charged attack and deal critical damage to mobs.

Dual-Wielding Like A Pro

You will be able to dual-wield weapons in Lords of the Fallen while also having the option to block and guard. This advanced combat move unlocks some special movesets which allows you to partake in longer combos.

The only setback for this is that these combos might leave you vulnerable for a short period as you will be unable to break free from the attack animation while dual-wielding. But if you can master the skill you will be able to do twice as much damage in just one hit. But if face-to-face combat isn’t your cup of tea, opt for ranged bows and crossbows instead.

Ranged Attacks

Although ranged attacks don’t deal a tremendous amount of damage with just one hit, they do provide safety in distance from swarming enemies and bosses that have AoE. Ranged weapons include bows and arrows, throwing knives, crossbows, throwing javelins, and even throwing axes which appear as starting weapons for some of the classes in Lords of the Fallen.

Your ranged weapon slot will be replaced by magic spells and the vestige bar will be replaced by mana if you opt for magic-using character class.

Lock On To Your Enemy And Stagger Them

One of the most basic tips that most players forget is to lock on to your enemies. When you lock on to your target, you will be able to dodge their attacks, make sure your range weapons hit correctly, and even build up a stagger meter for that enemy.

A stagger meter will usually appear as a white dot at the enemy’s core while you lock on to it and it will decrease over time. If you can perform a perfect block when that stagger meter is depleted, your enemy will collapse giving you the chance to do some heavy damage with visceral attacks. You can also use your kick to stagger your enemies.

Bosses will also have timing for stagger. For that, you first need to learn their moves and attack patterns to perform perfect blocks.

Recognize Boss Fight Patterns And Break Their Posture

Lords of the Fallen has a stack of deadly bosses you will need to face in order to progress in the game. But, most times these bosses will have a handful of memorizable sets of moves that they perform during battle. If you can keep track of those moves and dodge/parry them accordingly, you can probably emerge victorious in no time.

Another important thing to note is that this game incorporates a special system called Posture that defends these overpowered bosses from taking major damage. You can consider this mechanic as its own specialized shield, which you will need to break in order to perform highly damaging visceral attacks.

Dodge And Parry Can Save Your Life

While a perfect block can save you from dangerous attacks, dodge and parry can be far more useful if your opponent launches quick attacks that cannot be blocked by any means. Dodge lets you move away from any incoming attack in the blink of an eye and can even be combined with your own melee weapon for better damage.

Parry lets you use your shield for blocking attacks which also deal damage to your enemies. Heavier shields might deplete your endurance quicker with each use but offer better protection. You can also drop down on unsuspecting enemies for easy stagger.

Take Advantage Of Magic And Battle Areas

Magic is an integral part of Lords of the Fallen and can act as a replacement for ranged attacks in the game. You can either wield holy magic and purify your demonic enemies or use fire magic to burn them to crisps. Keep in mind, the use of magic will deplete your Mana which regenerates quickly with potions or after a while without them.

Fire spells will be helpful against swarming mobs but will be ineffective in the Rhogar region of the game’s map. You can also take advantage of the battle areas which have cliffs, pitfalls, etc., and shove them off.

The Worlds Of Axiom And Umbral

You will have to traverse within the world of the living, Axiom, and the world of the dead, Umbral to progress throughout the game. This seamless existence of two worlds in parallel will often be necessary to solve puzzles, defeat enemies, and find useful items in Lords of the Fallen. You will be able to use your Umbral Lamp from Axiom to peer into Umbral and even travel to it when needed.

But, Umbral being the land of the dead will have powerful enemies, which grow stronger the more time you spend in that realm. An Umbral meter can indicate how much time you have spent in that world and spawn deadly monsters if it is full.

Umbral Lamps let you perform Soul Flay, where you can drag the soul out of your enemies and lead them to their demise. Lamps also have the ability to absorb Umbral parasites that usually attach themselves to bigger enemies.

Skyrest Acts As The Main Hub

You will come across the place called Skyrest in Lords of the Fallen which will act as your main hub and resting spot when you are not so keen on dealing with monsters. You will find merchants that sell upgrade items, NPCs with side quests, and much more in the Skyrest.

Now that you’re well versed in Lords of the Fallen’s combat style, you can safely go on and start your journey. Wondering how much you need to beat the game? Here’s a guide to know how long it takes to beat Lords of the Fallen.
