The popular video game developer of Pokemon games, Game Freak, was reportedly developing a whole new non-Pokemon IP in 2014-15 for PS4 that was ultimately canned. This information was found by gaming leaker imur222 on the LinkedIn page of Masafumi Nukita, one of the senior developers of Game Freak at the time.

Nukita has jotted down his work experience and employment history in detail on his LinkedIn profile, which states that he was the director of a new IP meant for PS4 but it was canceled. The developer was in-charge of creating this unnamed IP’s plot and original concept, designing prototypes and necessary documentation, and setting of the game. After this new IP was scrubbed, he took charge as the lead game designer and writer for 2016’s Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon for Nintendo 3DS.
As Game Freak has a long standing history of making games for Nintendo, this unexpected news of them developing a game for Sony definitely comes as a shock. Co-owned by Nintendo, Game Freak’s focus in all its years has steadily been on developing Pokemon games exclusively for Nintendo consoles. There are very few non-Pokemon IPs developed by them, and these haven’t been a big hit amongst gamers. While this information is intriguing to many, several fans are glad that this project wasn’t released.

Game Freak has always offered their employees to work on their independent side projects with small teams throughout the years. Most of these games, however, do not seem to see the light of day. Currently, the developer has partnered up with Private Division in order to develop a new IP codenamed Project Bloom. Apart from concept art and smattering of details about this game possibly being an action-adventure game where gamers take role of a samurai, not much is made public.
