Beast of Reincarnation first showed up on the radar for most gamers back in May 2023, under a working title called Project Bloom. Since then, the game has come quite far, with developers Game Freak Inc. having showcased multiple trailers and gameplay videos. These clips presented the gorgeous landscape of future Japan, where you play as Emma with her K9 companion, Koo.
The game launches on August 4, 2026 at 12:00 UTC, and, naturally, fans who have been eyeing the title for quite some time might want to know a thing or two before purchasing a copy. So, let’s dive right into the list before you pick up your controllers.
1. It Is Japan…But Not the One You Know

Drawing inspiration from many titles in the industry, Beast of Reincarnation showcases a post-apocalyptic Japan set in the future, for a change, unlike the Ghost of Tsushima / Yotei or AC Shadows, in the year 4026. The game tells a story of harsh reality that Japan has faced two thousand years in the future, where the world is being corrupted by an entity called Blight. This corruption spreads through living things and turns them into violent creatures that are called Malefacts.
While it’s not the first time Japan has been portrayed in video games in a post apocalyptic or futuristic manner, Beast undoubtedly does a great job at portraying the eeriness of facing the Blight.
2. The Blight has Corrupted Koo

The developers have officially confirmed that your K9 companion, Koo, is also corrupted by the Blight. This makes the story further interesting to explore as you will be able to uncover the truth behind Emma and Koo’s partnership, and how they have bonded with each other across their journey so far.
I personally think that it is an interesting take to have a companion by your side that has the same corruption as the enemies you fight. Due to the corruption, Koo also features abilities of a Malefact, which makes him a force to be reckoned with.
3. Tactical RPG Meets Intense Action

Beast of Reincarnation successfully separates itself from other Action RPGs by featuring a deeply layered combat system. On the surface, it may look like a plain Sekiro-inspired game that focuses on parry-based combat. But you will be shocked to see the depths it can offer, as you juggle Emma’s own fighting abilities with Koo.
For your companion, you can pick the abilities from a seperate command menu, which makes the real-time fighting challenging yet fun. Koo comes in real handy when exploring through the world of futuristic Japan, which is filled with strong Malefacts to face.
4. You Won’t Find a Bloated Open World

While going into Beast of Reincarnation, don’t expect a massive open world which is filled with markers and chore work. Instead, Game Freak has developed a tightly packed world with non-linear stages where exploration is rewarded. It does not feature one single open-world map, which helps with the game’s pacing, and has it’s own charm that aids the story and gameplay both.
And rightly so, not every game has to be a checklist completion race. The tightly packed semi-linear approach of Beast gives it a identity of its own.
5. Emma’s Hair Plays an Important Role

Yes, you read that right. Emma’s own Blight powers allow her to create vines, which she can use to build bridges and ropes. This also comes in handy when you are exploring, as it can help you to get to places where you otherwise cannot. It plays an important role in traversal, and also gives the gameplay a special touch.
Her hair allows her to manipulate plant life, which is a part of her Blight-sealing abilities. While the detail itself looks small, but believe me when I say it matters a lot in both combat and traversal. When things get a little sticky, it can help you get out swiftly.
6. It is Game Freak’s Most Important Game So Far

Game Freak Inc. is popularly known for building the massive Pokémon franchise. However, Beast of Reincarnation is the most crucial game for them so far, as they are taking their experience from building a rich history of their previous games and putting it into a more action-based title. Not only that, but they are also putting a lot of weight behind an original IP while stepping outside of Pokémon.
I’m interested in seeing a completely different side of Game Freak with this title, as they explore a warm story of the relationship between Emma and Koo. This alone is enough to grasp my attention.
7. No Harsh Consequences Upon Dying

Beast of Reincarnation undoubtedly draws inspiration from many Soulslike titles, especially Sekiro. However, it does not bring two of the harshest features from that genre. The game does not punish you upon death, meaning when you lose to an enemy, you get to keep your XP and items.
Moreover, the enemies that you have already killed do not respawn. This makes the game a little easier for players who are stepping into the genre for the very first time, making their experience smooth and forgiving in a lot of instances.
8. The Game Has Difficulty Settings
The game has 3 difficulty settings – Story, Normal, and Hard. That should help make the game accessible to an audience that wants to take in the story without too much effort on the combat side – and the hard mode should take care of the action RPG fans who want the game to throw everything that it can to them, and then emerge victorious. For everyone else, of course, you have the normal mode that should give you a nice balance between the combat and exploration parts of the game. Hopefully, the devs will keep an eye out for required balance adjustments post release through patches.
9. Emma and Koo Have Separate Progression

Instead of having one simple progression tree, the game offers two distinct skill progression paths for both Emma and Koo. This allows for a deeper combat system and also helps you find your comfortable playstyle much sooner. I think this is a great choice as you get to explore more on Koo’s combat side while battling scary creatures in futuristic, dystopian Japan.
Aside from giving the combat more depth and freedom, the seperate skill tree system also makes the progression system feel more fresh and allows gamers to grind more if they fancy.
10. Stealth Gameplay Exists

Game Freak is not shying away from throwing stealth into the menu as a legitimate option, and not just a gimmick. You can create hiding spots for Emma on the fly, allowing her to attack enemies from stalking zones, and send Koo to initiate first contact. This gives a valid choice to those who like to approach their enemies from the shadows, rather than diving headfirst.
This also makes the gameplay in general much more engaging, as it can offer you the choice to run away from a fight or skip past enemies if required.
11. You Can Take Care of Your Koo in the Base

You can strengthen your bond with your K9 companion back in the base. This is one of the most important parts of their upkeep. You can give them all the deserved pets and keep them clean, which will deliver better combat results when using Koo’s abilities. The constant monitoring of Koo’s relationship meter makes the dynamic between the two characters much more interesting and engaging.
Speaking of upkeep, it is important to notice that Koo can be downed on the battlefield. The devs confirmed that allowing him to stay downed for prolonged period or frequently has negative gameplay consequences.
12. You Can Play Offline or Remotely

Let’s be honest, no one likes the online-only option when it comes to single-player, narrative-driven titles. Lucky for us, Game Freak is keeping away from this rule as Beast of Reincarnation can be played in completely offline mode or even remotely. Personally, I think this makes the experience much more enjoyable as I don’t have to connect to the internet always.
The game will be a strictly single-player title and will not feature any multiplayer or online elements. From the ground up, Beast of Reincarnation is developed to be a solo experience.
13. The System Requirements Don’t Wreck Your PC

Despite the gorgeous visuals and landscapes, Beast of Reincarnation is not a system crusher by any means. The title is built reasonably well, as it does not demand a rig that costs more than a used car. As mentioned on the official Steam page for the game, the recommended spec for the title asks for a CPU which is equivalent of an i7-12700K and a GPU which is equivalent a GeForce RTX 3060.
Hence, PC players can rejoice and enjoy the terrific world of post-apocalyptic and futuristic Japan with a cute and fluffy companion.
The game launches on PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and will also be available on Game Pass from launch day itself.
