Mortal Shell 2 is not shy about trying out new ideas and is here to deliver a much more polished experience compared to the first title. So far, it looks like a strong sequel to me that welcomes a plethora of additions. The sequel was first revealed back in Summer Game Fest 2025, and I must say, I was impressed right after watching the reveal. Moreover, the Open Beta has also been quite fascinating.
Mortal Shell 2 is coming on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on August 20, 2026. But before you jump in and start your journey, here’s a list of things you must know first.
1. Mortal Shell 2 is a Fresh Sequel

What impressed me about the sequel is that it does not require you to finish the first game in order to follow this one. Cold Symmetry has mentioned in the Open Beta email that players don’t need familiarity with the first game in order to enjoy Mortal Shell 2. You can still get the complete experience.
Honestly, I like this decision a lot. The first game fell short of a lot of people’s expectations, mostly due to clunky combat and an empty, but otherwise beautiful world. Treating the sequel as a fresh entry point allows for a new beginning.
2. The New Protagonist: Harbinger

Unlike the previous game, you are no longer a Foundling. You take control of Harbinger, a being born from an uncorrupted Ovum, whose objective is to reclaim a set of stolen eggs from the Undermether. Your character is not a human and relies on possessing Shells, which are the husks of once-great warriors.
While the premise may initially sound a little strange, it delivers a strong narrative to the game, and the world-building is absolutely fascinating in the limited open beta that I completed.
3. No More Stamina Bars

This is the most talked-about change when it comes to the sequel. The Stamina bar is completely removed this time around. Attacking, dodging, and blocking won’t drain any resources anymore. This changes the combat fundamentally, allowing you to be aggressive in a fight.
While the first game focused more on delivering an experience close to the Dark Souls games, the sequel takes a much different route, shifting the combat more towards aggression.
4. Interconnected and Compact Open World

If you are expecting a massive map such as Elden Ring, this is not the game. Mortal Shell 2 packs a deliberately compact and interconnected world, which respects your time. It connects areas through winding and interlinked paths compared to the isolated zones from the original.
If you have played the first Dark Souls game, you will find this map design interesting to explore. Being a compact map, the game still packs a good amount of content with plenty of dungeons to get lost in.
5. Eight Playable Shells

While the first Mortal Shell featured four playable Shells, the sequel is doubling that number. Moreover, Tiel the Acolyte, Eredim the Venerable, and Proxima the Broodseker have already been shown in the trailers. Each Shell will bring a different combat identity, which makes it much more interesting.
I feel like it is a massive jump in build variety and is a much appreciated one, especially when we have been spoilt by Elden Ring, trying out different weapons and builds.
6. It’s Made on Unreal Engine 5

The first Mortal Shell was made with Unreal Engine 4. The sequel, however, takes a leap in visuals with UE5. Environments, lighting, and character details look solid, as it uses the complete power of the engine. In June 2026, developers also confirmed the addition of ray tracing and upscaling support.
Currently, you can enhance your experience in the Open Beta with DLSS and Multi-Frame Generation, along with ray-traced reflections and global illumination lighting.
7. The Beta Broke Records

According to reports, Mortal Shell 2’s Open Beta on Steam was able to pull 500,000 downloads within two weeks. Moreover, the trailers have crossed six million views, combining YouTube, Twitch, and Shorts. While the first game was a cult hit, the sequel is undoubtedly aiming to be something bigger.
While the initial beta is received positively by most fans and the trailers are racking up numbers on social media, it is yet to be seen what the complete experience delivers.
8. Firearms Are a New Addition

Aside from the Ballistazooka, the original Mortal Shell kept you almost entirely on melee weapons. And that too was a rare pickup. Mortal Shell 2 changes that, offering you eight firearm options. The sequel treats combat very differently, focusing on aggression and resolve. Here, firearms become a much-favored option.
The ammo to use in these firearms is entirely fueled by Resolve, which gives the combat a different feel entirely. When you plan your builds, you will have to take into account the kind of firearm you will use and its upgrades.
9. Different Editions

Mortal Shell 2 is coming in three different editions. The standard edition will only include the base game and will cost $49.99. Then comes the Devout edition, which will include the base game and offer 72 hours of early access from August 17, 2026. Along with that, you will also receive 8 Obsidian Shell skins. It will cost $59.99.
The Revered Edition, on the other hand, is exclusive to PlayStation 5. It will cost $69.99 and come with a physical SteelBook, art book, fine art prints, and bonus Skeletal and Obsidian Harbinger skins.
10. It Launches Day One on All Platforms

Mortal Shell 2 will not feature a staggered console rollout. It will release simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Steam on the same day. That said, the Devout edition owners will receive early access as mentioned before.
So far, there has been no mention of a release on Nintendo Switch 2, at least yet. So if that’s your primary platform, you may have to keep an eye out for later announcements.
11. Doubled System Requirements

While the original game required 12GB of storage space, Mortal Shell 2 will be demanding significantly more than that. The official system requirements listed on Steam ask for 70GB of storage space, an RTX 2060 Super 8GB Graphics Card, 16GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i7-10700K CPU.
That’s a massive leap from its predecessor. But in its defense, Mortal Shell 2 is bringing a major uplift in visuals. With the release date being days away, I’m excited to see what the full game brings to the table.
