Jujutsu Kaisen: What is Heavenly Restriction?

With Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 having a successful run with the adaptation of the Gojo Past arc, the excitement around seeing Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, and Shoko Ieri in their school days at Tokyo Jujutsu High was a treat. However, all is not calm and bright in Gojo Past arc as antagonist Toji Fushiguro makes his entry to fight Satoru and his friends. But one thing that would catch the viewer’s eyes (and maybe ears) is that Toji isn’t a curse user. 

This was the major reason why he was shunned away from the Zenin clan, eventually leading him to take a path of his own. On the other hand, a similar phenomenon is seen with Maki Zenin. Now, one may point that it has something to do with the Zenin clan, but no. It can happen with any sorcerer, which is why Kokichi Muta, a non-Zenin member, is diagnosed with the same condition. And in the Jujutsu Kaisen-verse, it is called Heavenly Restriction.

Only three known sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen have been identified to have the Heavenly Restriction

Despite the weighty name it bears, Heavenly Restriction is a condition seen among jujutsu sorcerers where there are bindings placed on their body following their birth. The binding is not visible to the eyes and has no connection to the heavens, as the name suggests. It is just a phenomenon to pose restrictions on one’s body. 

However, it’s not like jujutsu sorcerers with Heavenly Restriction will get the shorter end of the stick. Take, for example, Toji Fushiguro. Since he was born without any curse energy, he was endowed with incredible speed and strength. Such is the case for Jujutsu Kaisen sorcerers whose lack of cursed energy will be replaced with enhanced physical characteristics. But on the other end is Kokichi, who was born without limbs. However, his disability was compensated by his high cursed energy. 

Thus, Heavenly Restriction is a type of curse restriction that exchanges a certain aspect of the human body with cursed energy. As a result, the “gifts” act as a tipping scale to bring equilibrium in an otherwise favorable condition.

Who in Jujutsu Kaisen have the Heavenly Restriction?

As has been stated earlier, Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen reportedly sees three sorcerers with Heavenly Restriction – Maki Zenin, Toji Fushiguro, and Kokichi Muta.

1. Maki Zenin

Yuki Tsukumo had noted that there have been instances where a person would be born with a level of curse energy that is so low that it can render the sorcerer a normal human with no cursed energy. This happened with Maki Zenin. Despite being seen as a Grade 4 sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen season 1 and Jujutsu Kaisen 0, her abilities aren’t reflective of her skills. In fact, her teacher, Satoru Gojo, and Mei Mei note that she could very well be a Grade 2 sorcerer. As for her combat skills, it was seen initially during the 2018 Goodwill Event, and later in the Shibuya Incident arc.

With a body that has the bindings of Heavenly Restriction, Maki has always shown a superior level of physical skills compared to her peers. However, following the death of her twin sister, Mai, Maki was granted a body of steel. This happened because, as explained by Mai, since they are identical twins, Mai was the one to be born with innate cursed energy, while Maki got the lower end of the deal.

In the Jujutsu Kaisen-verse, twins are treated as one person. With Mai living, Maki’s cursed energy was limited and prohibited her from reaching her full potential. So, when Mai sacrificed herself, all the cursed energy was taken from the two of them, but due the Heavenly Restriction, Maki instead achieved a body that was physically superior to her peers, something like Toji Fushiguro’s. Moreover, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga describes it as:

“Twelve years after his death, a demonic fighter equal to Toji Fushiguro has been realized.”

The immunity and durability of her body, along with the enhancement of her physical abilities, was seen after she recovered from the burns that she got with Jogo’s flames. Instantly, she could kill her father, assassinate the entire Zenin clan, take down the Kukuru Unit, and even resist Naoya’s Domain Expansion and slaughter him. During the Culling Game arc, she even possessed the ability the decimate the Big Three jujutsu sorcerer clans, and since she had no curse energy with her, she remained undetectable during the game.

2. Toji Fushiguro 

As for Toji Fushiguro, he was born into the Zenin without any cursed energy. This meant that the Heavenly Restriction was active on him from the moment of his birth, giving him earlier access to the benefits of enhanced combat skills, durability, and immunity. During Toji’s time, he was the only known person to have been born with Heavenly Restriction, making him the first of his kind as far as the registrations go. The brilliance of his physical strength is seen against his fight with the teenage Gojo, which already killed the latter once.

In the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, it was even mentioned that the trade-off of Heavenly Restriction in Toji’s case not only gave him physical prowess but also heightened his five senses to an absurd level. However, he can interact with cursed spirits and even possess an Inventory Curse that allows him to store any kind of weapons inside it, taking the tools out at his convenience to attack his targets. Some of his deadly weapons include Inverted Spear of Heaven, the Chain of a Thousand Miles, Split Soul Katana, Playful Cloud, etc.

A plus factor of Toji Fushiguro’s Heavenly Restriction in Jujutsu Kaisen is that he has zero curse energy, just like Maki Zenin following the death of her twin. This grants him several advantages, such as higung his Inventory Curse within his body so as sorcerers won’t be able to detect its presence, or when he was able to overwrite Granny Ogami’s soul information after he was resurrected, ensuring his stay in the living world for indefinite time.

3. Kokichi Muta, aka Mechamaru

A third specimen of the Heavenly Restriction, the bindings prevented the full growth of his physical body, which is why he was born with his right arm and without the lower part of his legs. Since this was an extreme case, due to the curse restriction, he was not immune to the effects of sunlight or moonlight and faced chronic pain upon contact with natural light. In the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, the pain was described as if every pore in his body was affected by severe pain that was similar to stabbing. 

However, his trade-off was high pools of cursed energy that was enough to cover even the entirety of Japan. He put this to good use by developing the Puppet Manipulation Technique. This allowed him to control cursed corpse puppets, such as his proxy Mechamaru, that can discharge various forms of cursed energy abilities. In the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, it was even mentioned that while using Mechamaru Mode: Absolute, he was prepared to utilise his reserved cursed energy over the years, which is 17 years, 5 months, and 6 days.
