Episode 4 of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 was a visual treat as the adrenaline that guided the viewers throughout the episode culminated with the death of Toji’ Fushiguro. However, one of the major mysteries that transpired over Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 4 was Toji’s Inventory Curse Spirit surviving the aftermath of his master’s battle with Gojo. Soon after, he was seen dragging himself across the pavement to meet a shocked Suguru Geto.
At this point, the Inventory Curse addressed the young jujutsu sorcerer “mommy” and asked for a hug in a distorted voice. But the question remains – why? Why would the curse go the extra mile to find Geto when it could have chosen to exist independently following the death of his master, Toji? Strangely enough, the question that was raised in episode 4 also answered the same.
Former loyalty to Toji may have prevented the Inventory Curse to be possessed by Suguru Geto earlier in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 4

The lack of canon information on the Inventory Curse makes it difficult to gauge the mystery around it. Whatever scarce information on the spirit is available, it is through Toji Fushiguro, who himself didn’t have much time in Jujutsu Kaisen to deserve a proper history. As a result, how, when, and where Toji got the Inventory Curse Spirit is still a mystery to Jujutsu Kaisen fans.
To come back to the topic at hand, Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 4 began with the face off between Sorcerer Killer Toji Fushiguro and Suguru Geto. After the latter summoned Kuchisake-Onna, an Imaginary Curse, and trapped him within her Domain, Geto tried to absorb the Inventory Curse into his possession by using his Curse Spirit Manipulation. However, it wasn’t successful, but for what reasons, it remains unknown.

Many fans of Jujutsu Kaisen theorize that the Inventory Curse was in a master-slave relationship with Toji, as a result of which the curse’s allegiance to the Sorcerer Killer forbade/restricted him to be possessed by Geto. Shortly after, the young jujutsu sorcerer was defeated, and following Toji’s handing over of Riko Amanai’s corpse to the Time Vessel Association, he was forced to confront Gojo once again. Here, the Sorcerer Killer died while standing up.
In a later scene, the most shocking and unusual bit arrives as the Toji Fushiguro’s Inventory Curse drags itself all the way from the site of battle to where Suguru Geto stands. In the manga, the dialog uttered by the curse was gibberish, which was later confirmed by mangaka Gege Akutami as “mommy, hug me” in the Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook. The same has been adapted to Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 4 as well. However, the reason why the Inventory Curse may have addressed Geto as “mommy” could have two viable conjectures.
Gege tends not to explain twice, instead relying on us to compile the pieces together from all canon content.
This Curse was trained by Toji as a pet. Though not with Jujutsu, It was bound to a master & Geto has to meet specific conditions to break that.#ShadzJK #JujutsuKaisen pic.twitter.com/Ekevmw6aCm

First, despite being a special curse, Toji’s Inventory Curse exhibited minimal intelligence, having been able to understand commands like summoning weapons, reducing into tiny goop for Toji to swallow, and later showing limited speech skills with his uttering of “Mommy, hug me.” So, since it was in a master-slave relationship with Toji, it’s natural for the curse to understand his commands only.
But when Suguru Geto tried to absorb it using Cursed Spirit Manipulation, it may have understood that it was being taken away by someone else. However, at that point, the Inventory Curse’s guardian was Toji, so it didn’t feel the need to detach itself away from the safety of the Sorcerer Killer, but that changed with Toji’s death. Here, the Inventory Curse, who also suffered the blow of Gojo’s Hollow Technique and witnessed the death of its master, may have realised the vulnerable state it was in and thus sought safety.
Geto, who has had contact with the Inventory Curse, may have made the spirit acknowledge his presence. Since Cursed Spirit Manipulation involved taking the spirits into one’s care, the Inventory Curse also interpreted Geto’s possession as a “safe” option. The “mommy” was thus its way of referring to someone who is a nurturer or a caretaker.

As for the “hug me” part, it brings us to the second conjecture. Many Jujutsu Kaisen fans have theorized that the Inventory Curse existed because it wanted to be used as an inventory, and the purpose was fulfilled through Toji’s possession. However, the need to be used as something meant that it probably had suffered from abandonment and likewise developed attachment issues with anyone it believed would take care of it. First was Toji, second was Geto. Therefore, the “hug me” was said in light of being wanted to be used as something that will be cherished, as people hug something or someone they love or adore. By ‘hugging’ it, Geto would next become its nurturer.
And this happens as fans then see keeping the Inventory Curse close to him and reaping off its benefits in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. As such, to reiterate again, Toji Fushiguro’s Inventory Curse calls Suguru Geto “mommy” so that the latter would take it under his care and guarantee its survival.
