So you watched the Fallout series, and it made you want to go back into the world of Fallout. And after having spent a good time doing a full run in Fallout 4 and perhaps Fallout New Vegas as well (but not Fallout 76), you’re still yearning for similar game experiences.
Fret not, for we have put together a list of 10 best games to play if you liked Fallout.

10. Far Cry: New Dawn
Release Date | Feb 2019 |
Developer | Ubisoft Montreal |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
Far Cry: New Dawn picks up the story in Hope County, Montana, where a nuclear explosion took place at the end of Far Cry 5. Only in this case, the nuclear explosion seems to have filled up the world in very pretty pink flora and fauna.
The standard Far Cry mechanics of capturing outposts, tight gunplay, and frantic combat are all very much there. However, the game also includes RPG elements, crafting, and a home base system to give the right familiar vibes to Fallout fans looking to try out the game.
9. Mad Max
Release Date | Sep 2015 |
Developer | Avalanche Studios |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
The game was overshadowed at launch by the simultaneous release of Metal Gear Solid V, but it has developed a following over the following years. Mad Max is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and players take the role of Max as he, along with his vehicle, the Magnum Opus, battles a gang of raiders led by ‘Scabrous Scrotus’.
The game has fun vehicular combat that never gets boring, and the classic melee combat system of the Batman Arkham series. Fallout fans are sure to dig the upgrade system for the vehicle which consists of collecting items from camps and enemies and then crafting back at the base. Play it for the overall feel of wandering about in a nicely rendered post-apocalyptic wasteland filled with deserts and sparse human settlements.
8. Red Dead Redemption 2
Release Date | Oct 2018 |
Developer | Rockstar Games |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
There is something of a western cowboy feel to the setting, landscape, gunplay, NPC conversations, and outfits that you have in Fallout. Except, of course, for the nuclear wasteland. But that is exactly why Red Dead Redemption is an experience that will at once be welcoming and familiar to Fallout fans.
Add to this the organic world-building part that Red Dead Redemption nails down in a way few other open world RPGs manage to, this one is an easy recommendation for games to play if you liked Fallout
7. Cyberpunk 2077
Release Date | Dec 2020 |
Developer | CD Projekt Red |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
Cyberpunk 2077 did not get to the best of starts as far as video game launches are concerned. But it has redeemed itself quite magnificently over the years since its launch with subsequent patches and a great DLC in Phantom Liberty.
While the densely populated Night City does not bear much resemblance to anything in Fallout, fans will feel right at home in the kind of organic world-building that Cyberpunk 2077 offers. Expect interesting side quests, guns and melee options to combat, stealth mechanics, and RPG elements like character builds.
6. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Release Date | Aug 2016 |
Developer | Eidos Montreal, Feral Interactive |
Platforms | PC, PS4, Xbox One |
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the most recent and well-received game in the Deus Ex series and is an action RPG set in a cyberpunk, dystopian future. The game excels in choice-driven narrative, augmentations and upgrade system for role-playing, various approaches to combat, and world-building.
It has a smaller map but with meaningfully designed spaces within where players can stumble upon a side quest rather than being pointed out to it with map markers. Also, like Fallout, these side quests along with posters and graffiti across the city play a big role in world-building.
5. Starfield
Release Date | Sep 2023 |
Developer | Bethesda |
Platforms | PC, Xbox Series S/X |
Okay, this is an easy recommendation. Fans of Fallout will feel right at home in the familiar overall interface of how things work – the shooting, stats, movement, conversations with NPCs. There are also different factions, a crafting and base building system, dialog options basis skill checks, lock-picking, detailed character creation, etc.
Thankfully, there are also differences. The levelling system, the overall tone of the game, and the sheer size and number of things to do in Starfield will give fans of Fallout something different and novel while maintaining the familiarity to a game system they enjoy so much.
4. Bioshock
Release Date | Aug 2007 |
Developer | 2K Studios |
Platforms | PC, PS3, Xbox 360 |
This is the oldest game on the list which harks back to the PS3/Xbox 360 era (there is a remastered version for PS4/Xbox One that released later). The mechanics of the game still very much hold their own against a lot of offerings today, and the under-water world of Rapture is of a scale and detail that only a few modern games can stand against.
The darkly satirical tone, the architecture of the world, the music, and soundtrack are also in-sync with what the Fallout stories have. It’s a must-try for all Fallout fans – there is a reason the game scores a 96 on Metacritic and a 9.0 on user score.
Players can also try out Bioshock 2 and Bioshock Infinite, both of which were also received quite well and built on the elements that made the first one so great.
3. Metro Exodus
Release Date | Feb 2019 |
Developer | 4A Games |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
Metro Exodus is the sequel to Metro Last Light and was released in 2019 as an FPS. The game puts players in the shoes of protagonist Artyom, who navigates a post-apocalyptic Russia laid waste due to a nuclear war.
While the game is a more linear experience with higher emphasis on shooting, there are elements in the game like stealth and crafting which will be immediately familiar to Fallout fans. What, however, makes this game closest to Fallout is the overall environment details, atmosphere, and the ravaged landscape where the protagonist makes his journey.
2. Wasteland 3
Release Date | Dec 2020 |
Developer | inXile Entertainment |
Platforms | PC, PS4, Xbox One |
Get this – Bryan Fargo, the main developer of the first Wasteland game, then went to work on Fallout, came back, and founded the studio that made Wasteland 2 and 3. Little wonder then that lot of the world-building and overall tone of Wasteland 3 gives strong Fallout vibes. Wasteland 3 also has a very strong emphasis on decision-making that has impactful consequences for end game.
1. The Outer Worlds
Release Date | Oct 2019 |
Developer | Obsidian Entertainment |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
Outer Worlds was launched when the Fallout franchise had just about dealt with the disastrous release of Fallout 76 a year back. The game clearly wears its Fallout: New Vegas (a fan favorite in the Fallout series) inspiration on its sleeves and brings a lot of familiar Fallout mechanics to the table.
It also takes the satirical tone of the Fallout world and adds dollops of humor to bring some of the most hilarious NPC conversations and side quests in recent times in a game. This is an easy recommendation to Fallout fans to spend a good 20-25 hours (including 2 DLCs).
And that brings us to the end of the list for top 10 games to play if you liked Fallout. In case you are looking for other recommendations in the action RPG genre, you may want to check out our list of games like Dragon’s Dogma 2.
