The Hitman series
Funny is not the word that might come to your mind when you first play a Hitman game. But spend a couple of hours with Eidos Interactive’s stealth classic and you’ll begin to see the funny side. From witty dialogue options to hilarious kill animations, Hitman brings a Looney Tunes-esque element to the games’ otherwise morbid setting.
Goat Simulator
The title says it all. Goat Simulator originally started out as a joke project by Coffee Stain Studios during their downtime after the creation of Sanctum 2. But clearly the joke got serious, and the result was one of the funniest games you’ll ever find. This game is actually a clever mockery of broken game physics with some humorous gameplay elements, the hilarity of which is enhanced by the caprine protagonist.
The Grand Theft Auto series
GTA may have the most playtime of any video game franchise. While it is revered for the free open world gameplay elements that allow you to do almost anything, underneath it all is a hard-hitting social satire. While the brand of comedy offered by GTA may not be to everyone’s liking, the game does a pretty good job of blending it with non-stop action.
GTA’s radio stations in particular are a riot with some hilarious segments. They even gave Guns ‘n’ Roses’s controversially rude lead singer Axl Rose a hilarious character on a show.
The Sims
EA’s real-life simulator was purposely designed to highlight the futility of human endeavor in a humorous way, and it definitely deserves a spot on our funny single player games PC list. The game allows players to control virtual avatars (mostly of themselves) and do anything they want. The result is often quite hilarious, involving various mishaps due to poor management.
Fable
This is a remarkable entry from British developer Lionhead studios, so naturally the game features a lot of that classic dry British humor. While this is a serious RPG with many genre defining elements, you get introduced to its signature humor right at the onset. The gameplay is quite mesmerizing for the time, but you won’t care about any of that because you would be too busy trying to get rid of your titles of ‘chicken-chaser’, ‘salad dodger’, and ‘nobhead’, all of which are generously bestowed upon you.
Portal 2
Portal is a franchise that could give a certain popular billionaire CEO waking nightmares for the rest of his life. This sci-fi horror game is packed with funny dialogues and humorous interactions with the game’s NPCs, who are all AI robots. GLaDOS, the main antagonist, is as hilarious as she is devious. It also has J.K Simmons doing a great job voicing yet another primary antagonist in the game.
The Elder Scrolls
Bethesda is a company that likes to poke fun at itself, but in games it’s not always on purpose, especially when it comes to The Elder Scrolls. It has to been one of the best funny single player games PC has.
Apart from the now overused meme, Elder Scrolls games have had some hilarious dialogue options and banter that’ll keep you invested just to see/hear the punch line. And let’s not forget about the mods. It is hard to name one that doesn’t have some goofy feature that keeps you grinning throughout. Even minor NPCs like Sam Guevenne and the adoring/annoying fan are worth the countless glitches that might mar the gameplay.
Southpark games
If you hate Family Guy and love jokes that would offend Jimmy Carr, then South Park is for you. There’s tons of stuff you can do, and before you know it- ‘Oh my god! You killed Kenny.’ Our editors won’t allow us to reveal any more about this for PG reasons, so, you know it’s THAT good. But do remember that much like the show, all voices are impersonated poorly, and that adds to the crappiness of it.
Saints Row (especially IV)
Not including this franchise in the list of funniest single player PC games would be a sin. The Saints Row franchise is basically GTA on steroids before GTA actually started taking steroids. These games combine action and open world elements with some great story.
Saints Row 4 is the highlight because you literally have no limits. The game is about becoming the president of the United States, which is quite easy these days, but ten years ago it needed a lot of accomplishments and abilities like repelling an alien invasion, learning how to fly, and something called ‘death from above.’ That last one seems quite useful for any President.
The Stanley Parable
Stanley Parable is a cult classic. It is a brilliant game with its own genre that relies exclusively on story. Needless to say, the game relies on humor to deliver the gameplay experience, and it is executed quite well- so well that you often forget that through the entire game, you are interacting with the developer. It is meta funny.
Borderlands
The Borderlands franchise is a perfect blend of comedic storytelling and action role-playing. All aspects of the game, from the cowboy theme to the sci-fi dystopian overtones, are brought together by the endlessly funny narrative. The adult humor is quite tasteful for a PEGI 18 game.
The Overlord games
Overlord is probably the most underrated game in this list of funny single player games PC. This rarely-talked-about Codemasters classic is worth every second of gameplay.
You play as a cruel overlord (that’s right, you’re the bad guy) who goes around terrorizing people throughout an entire realm for reasons that are purely determined by the player. Dominate an entire realm…with whose army you might ask. Well, the wannabe Sauron gets to command an army of gremlins-like creatures.
The unique gameplay of this title allows you to control the little guys all at once. They also come in various classes. Each gremlin has the ability to gain its own personality and behave in a unique way. All of this is orchestrated in the silliest way imaginable, even the deaths. Only thing funnier than the Overlord’s minions are the humans he terrorizes.
The Metal Gear series
If you’re wondering how exactly a game with that title and a description like ‘Tactical Espionage Action’ could be funny, well, you don’t know Konami. Or its creator Hideo Kojima, the man who had memes in his games long before memes or the internet was even a thing.
When Kojima keeps you waiting, he is coming up with characters like Johnny Sasaki, a hardened tactical ops agent with IBS who loses control of his bowels at the most inopportune moments. Of course, there is some useful information as well about the awesomeness of a puppy’s paw pads and or what a horse can do to stop an entire convoy of armed vehicles.
Undertale
Undertale is a 2D RPG masterpiece with some incredible gameplay elements and memorable characters. It is a kid’s game that has appealed largely to adults, one major reason being the tasteful humor. Each character is well-developed and relatable on levels that are rare in video games. What makes the game so great is the hilarious way in which its juvenile protagonist interacts with each of these characters. Silent Hill games
Konami never ceases to amuse, even if it is the most recognized survival horror game that introduced the genre. The Silent Hill series is as scary as it gets, even with outdated graphics. Still, Konami somehow manages to sneak in comic elements that make all the scares and the mental trauma the butt of a joke.
The butts of Konami’s biggest joke are the players themselves in Silent Hill 1, when they discover after 15 hours of grueling gameplay the ending that all this was because of a dog. The worst part is that it is the only dog in the entire game despite there being tons of dog houses.
