Fishing in Graveyard Keeper 2 will not be available to you right at the beginning of the game. This means I was not able to just walk up to any riverbank with a stick and start casting. The system is locked behind a short early quest that asks you to recover the Merchant’s missing Fishing Rod from a pair of twins.
After getting the rod and knowing the rules, it became a solid source of food and money for me in the game. In this guide, I will explain how you can fish easily in the game.
How to Fish in Graveyard Keeper 2
After you have unlocked the fishing rod and added it to your inventory, you have to equip it. Then, do the following:
- Open your map and look for designated fishing spots. Random shorelines do not work; the interaction only appears at marked locations.
- Stand at a valid fishing spot and start fishing.
- Choose bait if you have it. Matching the right bait to the spot improves your catch rate and the quality of fish you can land. Different spots have different fish populations.
- When a fish bites, press the interact button (E on keyboard / A on controller) quickly to hook it.
- During the reeling minigame, hold the button to reel the fish in while the line is stable. Ease off or release when the fish fights hard so the line doesn’t snap.
The best indicator of when to press the interact button, and when to let go, is the exclamation mark. If it is there, you reel in the fish, if not, just tap the button – do not continue to hold it.
The minigame is more about managing tension than pure button-mashing, which makes catching every fish exciting. Moreover, it is one of the many side activites which kept me engaged in the game when I was taking a break from the main quests and usual item grinding.
Unlocking the Fishing Rod in Graveyard Keeper 2
- Talk to the Merchant in the village. He’ll mention that the twins took his Fishing Rod.
- Cross the river to find the twins.
- They’ll send you to Jeffrey, who turns the request into a Pottery job.
- Unlock Pottery I in the Tech Tree (Building tab). It costs 10 Red Tech Points + 5 Green Tech Points.
- Craft a Pottery Wheel (2 Wooden Planks + 1 Stone at the Crafting Table).
- Mine Clay from the brown patches on the map and make at least one Clay Plate on the Pottery Wheel.
- Return the Pottery to the twins. They will hand over the Fishing Rod.
That’s the only way to get your first rod in the early game. You cannot buy or craft one until this quest is complete.
Tips to Use for Better Results
Here are a few tips to improve your fishing adventures in Graveyard Keeper 2:
- Fishing doubles as both an energy-food source and a way to make good money. Hence, sell excess fish to the shop, or you can cook them once you unlock the required recipes.
- I recommend unlocking fishing early in the game because it can shorten your overall resource grind significantly.
- Later in the game, you can get your hands on better fishing rods that allow you to use them on zombies so they can fish automatically. It is also one of the many tools zombies can use in Graveyard Keeper 2.
