Borderlands 4 is a looter-shooter, and managing the items that you get is part of the gameplay loop. As you complete the campaign, unlock Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, and eventually reach the endgame, you will come across a variety of weapons and other items that you’ll constantly replace. However, your backpack space isn’t infinite, and you can’t store everything that you get.
As such, in order to manage your inventory in Borderlands 4, you need to drop your old items to replace them with the new ones. However, dropping items in this game is way more complicated than it needs to be. There is no direct button that you can press or click to drop your items. The good part is that even though the game doesn’t make it obvious, there are ways you can drop the items that you don’t want.
How Can I Drop Items In Borderlands 4
If you want to drop items in Borderlands 4, you can do it by pressing R on PC, Y on Xbox, and Triangle on PlayStation. All you need to do is open your Backpack and then hover the cursor over the particular item and hold any of the buttons depending on the platform. This will drop the loot on the ground, which you can pick up again or let it remain discarded.
Apart from that, if you’re currently holding a weapon in your hand, and you pick up a different one, the one in your hand will be dropped. Finally, it’s possible to drop your items by pressing the End button on your keyboard for PC. The problem is that there is no button configuration for End on Consoles. As such, the only way to do it is by either pressing Y or Triangle, depending on whether it’s Xbox or PC.

What Happens When You Drop Items In Borderlands 4
When you drop an item in Borderlands 4, it remains on the ground until it eventually despawns. As such, it’s not recommended to drop items unless you really want to discard them. Otherwise, keep them in your inventory for a while until you find the appropriate replacement, and then you can drop them.
It’s also possible that your party members pick up the dropped items in Borderlands 4. This makes it easy to share loot, especially because in this game, every person receives different loot. As such, it’s always possible you receive items that might be better for your friend. If you’re playing solo, then it doesn’t matter, and you can drop or pick up items as you please in Borderlands 4.
