Like other games following Dungeons & Dragons’ 5th edition rulesets, Baldur’s Gate 3 also has a resting mechanic. This game has two types of resting: Long Rest and Short Rest. As the name suggests, Long Rest demands more uninterrupted downtime than Short Rest in exchange for more HP and spell slot restoration.
In this guide, we’ll dive into different types of rests and ways to use them in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Short Rest: Benefits and how to use
Short Rest is the most useful way to regain some of the HP and Spells when you’re out of combat. Using a Short Rest will take 15 minutes of your in-game time and provide half of your HP back.
How to use Short Rest in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Click on the campfire icon in the bottom-right section of the screen. This will bring up a menu including all of the rest mechanics and a campfire option.
- Choose Short Rest and regenerate half of the health back while also refreshing some skill cooldowns.
Although Short Rest doesn’t replenish all the features and spells of most classes in this game, it does have some limited benefits for each class.
Benefits of Short Rest in BG3 include:
- All classes- Replenishes 50% HP of each character and refreshes some Cooldown.
- Barbarian- If you drop to zero HP while Enraged, you regain 1 HP instead of being Downed.
- Bard- Regains all Bardic Inspiration (Song of Rest ability adds an extra Short Rest for 3.)
- Cleric- Replenishes all Channel Divinity charges.
- Druid- Druids of the Land subclass recover 50% of the spell slots for the first Short Rest of the day.
- Fighter- Recharges Second Wind charges. Battle Master Fighters regain expended Superiority Dice.
- Monk- Replenishes all Ki Points.
- Paladin- Replenishes all Channel Oath charges.
- Sorcerer- Recovers Tides of Chaos (Wild Magic subclass)
- Warlock- Replenishes all spell slots.
Long Rest in Baldur’s Gate 3: Benefits and how to use
Unlike Short Rest, Long Rests are a lot more time-consuming and rewarding. While Short Rests can be useful in cases of restoring half of the HP for all classes and spell slots for Warlocks before a fight, Long Rests are better for restoring everything to the fullest and calling it a day.
To use Long Rest in BG3:
- Click on the campfire icon in the bottom-right section of the screen and choose the Long Rest option. This will teleport you to the camp in front of your bed.
- Click on the campfire or the beds to open up a menu asking for 40 camp supplies, which will allow you to perform your long rest. If you don’t have enough resources, you can also take Partial Rest to restore half of the party’s HP and spell slots.
Long Rest not only replenishes your resources but also helps you with the role-play interactions between you and your BG3 companions by getting to know them better. Also, this game subtly tries to tell you that time is running out, but don’t worry about it, as it only matters from a role-playing perspective; you can take as much Long Rest as you need to restore your supplies.
While in the camp, you can also spam multiple Partial Rests without spending any resources. But remember, if you start a Long Rest, you cannot leave the camp until you take a Partial Rest or Long Rest.
