Is Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra a MOBA?

You likely have not heard of Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra unless you were actually looking for it, so you may be surprised by what you see. That’s totally fine; a lot of people didn’t know about this game or the gameplay prior to its release.

Luckily, we have a lot of information, so you know whether this game will be for you or not. Keep in mind that this style is only appealing to certain players, but if you’re curious, you should always try it, as it may become one of the best games on Steam.

What Kind of Game Is Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra?

Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra is a MOBA, plain and simple. It’s a four-on-four online battle game on a mirrored map, which is what you’d expect from a MOBA. The main goal is to take down the enemy’s guardians and then destroy their base, which is called a Dragon Shell. This is pretty much like destroying the Nexus in other MOBA games, so right away, you know what kind of game you’re getting into.

The game also uses a lot of classic MOBA mechanics, like character roles and lane-based progression. There are three types of characters: Damage, Tank, and Technical. Each one has its own unique abilities and ways to play, which means you have to think about your team’s composition and how to counter the other team.

As you play, your character levels up by defeating minions and enemies, which unlocks new abilities, transformations, and super-powerful ultimate attacks. The feeling of using a perfect ultimate to turn a game around is something every MOBA player loves, and Gekishin Squadra delivers on that.

While the game simplifies things a bit by only having two lanes, it still has all the essential elements that define the genre: team strategy, character progression, objective control, and a focus on coordinated combat. It’s great for anyone who has been interested in this genre but never tried it.

If you’re into online battle arenas, you might want to check out Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra. It’s a new 4v4 online battle arena that mixes the deep strategy of a MOBA with the crazy, explosive, character-driven action of the Dragon Ball universe. It takes core ideas from games like League of Legends (teams fighting for control, destroying objectives, and attacking a final base) and gives them a vibrant, nostalgic Dragon Ball twist.

This isn’t just a simple reskin; it’s a super-effective experience that really understands the unique power-scaling and iconic abilities of its source material. This game simplifies some of the usual MOBA stuff by using just two main lanes for movement and a more streamlined progression system. But it also adds some cool twists of its own. This may make it one of the best anime games around.

Matches kick off with “Divine Draws,” which are random buffs or nerfs that can totally change the flow of a game and keep every match unpredictable. You also get to choose a “Helper” to go with your main fighter, which is an ability on a cooldown that can turn the tide of a fight. Instead of normal towers, you have to defend “Gods of Destruction,” which are powerful guardians that heal your allies and have to be beaten to expose the enemy’s “Dragon Shell,” which is the main objective, kind of like a Nexus.

Character selection is a huge part of the game, with 22 characters at launch, from classic heroes and villains to more recent additions. These fighters are split into Damage, Tank, and Technical roles, each with its own unique abilities and playstyles. What’s really exciting for fans is the in-match transformation mechanic, which lets characters power up as they level up, unlocking new buffs and eventually unleashing spectacular ultimate attacks that fill the screen with energy blasts and flashy finishers. The attention to detail is awesome, with even subtle character interactions when you pair them up in a lane.

Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra also fixes a common MOBA problem: long match times. While some matches can go on a bit, most are designed to be quicker, often lasting around 10 to 15 minutes, which makes it way more accessible for players who want to jump in for a shorter session.

Your progression outside of matches is handled with a battle pass system that gives you cosmetics and titles, some for Dragon Gems, and detailed post-match breakdowns offer some great analytics for improving your game.

Is Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra Like League of Legends?

Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra clearly takes a lot of inspiration from games like League of Legends, taking the familiar MOBA style and putting it into the super vibrant world created by Akira Toriyama. At its heart, it’s a four-on-four online battle arena on a symmetrical map, where teams fight for control and try to take down the enemy’s base, or in this case, claim their Dragon Ball.

Just like in League, players can pick from a diverse cast of characters, each with a different role like Damage, Tank, and Technical, which are basically the same as the carry, tank, and support roles you see in regular MOBAs. Goku and Trunks might be your main damage dealers, Vegeta and Cell your tough bruisers, and Krillin or Android 17 your tactical tricksters, offering buffs and ways to strategically turn the tide of a fight.

The in-match progression will feel instantly familiar if you’ve ever played League of Legends. You level up your character by taking down minions and enemy players, which unlocks new abilities, transformations, and eventually, powerful ultimate attacks. The game even has “Gods of Destruction,” which are basically the same as turrets or inhibitors, healing allies, and blocking your path until you defeat them.

The final goal is to destroy the enemy’s Dragon Shell to win, which is a direct parallel to taking down the Nexus. While Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra keeps things a bit simpler with usually only two lanes, it still has that strategic depth of team composition, lane management, and objective control that defines the MOBA genre.

However, Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra also adds its own unique flavor, making it more than just a carbon copy. There’s a big emphasis on character-specific transformations, which gives you a dynamic power spike in the middle of a match that feels very unique to Dragon Ball. The game also includes “Helpers,” which are equippable abilities with cooldowns, adding another layer of strategy beyond just your character’s kit. “Divine Draws” are random match events that can shake things up and keep every match from feeling exactly the same, which is a big departure from League’s more predictable structure.

On top of all that, the game really leans into its lore with fun character interactions when certain fighters are paired in a lane, a feature that League has only just recently started to do more of. The visuals are pure Dragon Ball, with cel-shaded art, flashy energy blasts, and all the iconic sound effects that pull you right into the show’s chaotic spectacle. So while it borrows a lot from the genre’s pioneers, Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra successfully combines core MOBA mechanics with the beloved elements of the Dragon Ball universe, creating an experience that’s both familiar and fresh.

Will I Like Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra’s Gameplay?

You’ll like it if you like MOBAs. If you’re a fan of Dragon Ball in any capacity, from the classic fighting games to the more niche spin-offs, you’re likely to find something to enjoy here. One of the standout features is the detailed tutorial, which is a major plus if you’re new to MOBAs or haven’t delved deep into games like League of Legends or Dota 2.

This approachable introduction guides you through the basics of lanes, objectives, and abilities, ensuring you feel confident enough to jump into your first real match without feeling like a burden to your team. If you appreciate a MOBA that respects its genre while infusing it with a unique and beloved IP, and are open to a potentially chaotic yet satisfying Dragon Ball showdown, then Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra’s gameplay is likely for you.
