Dying Light: The Beast has made fans curious who are wondering about what it really is. The game coming out brings back Kyle Crane, the popular main character from the first game, in what looks like it will be an intense scary survival game.

Dying Light: The Beast is a standalone game, not DLC. While it started development as downloadable content for Dying Light 2: Stay Human, the scope expanded significantly during production. Techland made the decision to transform it into a full standalone experience after realizing the potential of the concept.
The transformation happened for several reasons. A major story leak in 2023 forced the developers to reconsider their approach. During week-long meetings, they decided to bring back Kyle Crane as the main character. This shift required getting Roger Craig Smith, Kyle’s original voice actor, back on board. Without him, the project would not have made sense.
Franchise director Tymon Smektala has stated that for Techland, this is essentially Dying Light 3. The game features approximately three hours of cutscenes, all rendered in third person rather than the series’ typical first-person perspective. This change emphasizes the hero-centric nature of the story.
The game takes place in Castor Woods, a rural tourist destination that has been overrun by zombies. Players will experience Kyle Crane’s story roughly 13 years after he was presumed dead. The narrative focuses on revenge, trauma, and survival as Kyle seeks to get back at the mysterious Baron who experimented on him. Unlike Aiden Caldwell who players controlled in Dying Light 2, Kyle brings his military background and combat expertise to this new adventure.
Will Dying Light The Beast come with DLC content
Dying Light: The Beast will likely receive additional content after launch, though Techland has not announced specific DLC plans yet. The game launches as a complete standalone experience with 18 to 20 hours of main story content and an additional 20 to 30 hours of side content.
Pre-order customers receive the Hero of Harran bundle, which includes exclusive cosmetics, weapons, and a vehicle. This content will not be available after launch, making it truly exclusive for early supporters. Ultimate Edition owners of Dying Light 2 will receive the game at no additional cost, as Techland wanted to show appreciation for patient fans who waited for the promised DLC.
The game introduces Beast Mode, a new gameplay mechanic where Kyle can transform using his hybrid human-zombie DNA. Players can switch between two distinct playstyles: human survivor and uncontrollable beast. In Beast Mode, Kyle gains superhuman strength and can crush skulls, tear off heads, and rip enemies apart with his bare hands. This shows a big change from the usual zombie survival game rules found in other horror games on Steam.
The day-night cycle creates two different gameplay experiences. Daytime allows for exploration and scavenging, while nighttime brings deadlier enemies like Shadow Hunters and Volatiles. Players must choose to run, hide, or fight when darkness falls.
Dying Light: The Beast launches on September 18, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will arrive later in 2025. The game supports four-player cooperative multiplayer.
