The second phase of Jing Ye boss fight can be troublesome, as none of your common attacks will deal any damage to its HP bar. Jing Ye will start to rely on his small spiky shield to block all of your attacks, and he will be more aggressive with his attacks after blocking them. The entire second phase can be unforgiving if you are not well prepared for the fight. If you are having trouble dealing with Jing Ye, then you are in the right place.
In this guide, I will give you all the helpful tips you should keep in mind for your battle against Jing Ye, especially during the second phase and the preparation beforehand. Once Jing Ye’s shield is removed during the second phase, the rest of the fight will be much easier to deal with instead of causing constant panic.
Jing Ye’s Shield in Phantom Blade Zero
Here we will use Dread Axe with Shieldbreaker Talisman to deal as much damage as possible to break Jing Ye’s shield during the second phase. You must combine Dread Axe and normal attacks to take out the shield from Jing Ye, especially on harder difficulties.
“Heart of the Banyan” quest will put you through one of the roughest boss encounters in Phantom Blade Zero: the Jing Ye boss. You will run into Jing Ye as you are following the critical path in the Crimson Forest region. The boss is found south of the Burial Ground Path bell.
Boss Preparation:
Having a proper setup will help you immensely during the fight with Jing Ye; here, I will recommend perfect accessories to deal with the first and second phases of the boss encounter. In the first phase, Jing Ye will be mounted on a horse while holding his weapon at his side, and during the second, he will be relying on his shield. We need a perfect setup to deal with both of these scenarios.
- Dread Axe as Phantom Edge: Before the encounter, I highly recommend that you upgrade your Dread Axe (dropped weapon from Peng Meng, the Axemaster) as much as possible for Jing Ye’s fight. You can take it to Lv. 5 or Lv. 6.
- Shieldbreaker Talisman: The second thing you should focus on is getting the Shieldbreaker Talisman, which increases the damage done to shields by a whopping 50%. You can find the Shieldbreaker Talisman in a chest northeast of the Abandoned Main Road bell in Crimson Forest.
- Cavalrybane (Accessory): Other items include using Cavalrybane, which deals damage to mounted enemies. Since the first phase of Jing Ye will be on a horse, this will help you clear out the first phase easily. It’s found in a golden chest below the crank that you will use to free Quick Hand Zhang in Crimson Forest.
Dealing with the First Phase

During the first phase, focus on damaging Jing Ye’s stamina to stun him and deal damage. Here, Jing Ye will resort to leap attacks, common melee, and projectile hits. You can block and dodge all of these attacks, but your primary focus should always be to damage his stamina. Once you have dealt enough damage, you will get a QTE button prompt, Y“, on the screen, which will help you knock Jing Ye off his horse.
Dealing with the Second Phase (Shield Phase)

Here, Jing Ye will equip his spike shield; any type of common attack from your end will be blocked by his shield. The very first thing to do when Jing Ye lands on the ground from the horse is to keep attacking him with Dread Axe. After two or three hits with the Dread Axe, run away and create distance, as he will start coming after you.
Now focus on dodging and blocking his attacks before using the Dread Axe again. I advise you to use the Dread Axe right after he is done with his combo; don’t try to pull out the axe in the middle of his combo, or you will get hit. Even if you are well prepared for a fight, always have your hand on the HP potion, just in case things do go wrong.
Once you run out of Dread Axe charges, rely on the common sword slashes to deal damage to the shield and also to the back of Jing Ye to deal health damage. Once Jing Ye’s shield is gone, the rest of the fight will become much simpler; you can then start dealing consistent damage with your normal attack to defeat him. Defeating Jing Ye will reward you with “Outlaw Warblade“.
