Obtaining weapons and gear isn’t the only way to get stronger as you progress through SpiritVale. Later in the game, you will find your chosen weapons lacking, and you won’t get the same amount of damage output required for late game areas. That’s when you need to learn how to refine and modify your equipment to make it stronger and have better stats.
Luckily, the game does provide two ways to upgrade your gear. Early on, visiting the Blacksmith will take up all your time and resources as you scale your weapon and gear stats. But once you reach the very late game, you will find this lacking too. This guide will cover everything about refining and upgrading your gear in the game.
How to Modify Equipment in SpiritVale

After collecting your weapons and gear, you will notice that some of them will offer bonus stats when refined. In order to refine gear, you need to get two unique items. Namely, you need sufficient gold and sufficient chunks or shards. You will get both items from enemy drops in the overworld, but the drop chance is quite rare.
I ran into a roadblock while trying to farm enough resources to upgrade materials, until I found an easier way. If you visit the town, you will find a materials merchant here. Check out their store to find several chunks and shards for sale. Again, you need to spend coins to purchase them, and that’s something that exclusively drops from enemies.
If you wish to know what materials you require for each weapon or gear, visit the Blacksmith in town and select the weapon you wish to upgrade. It will show you what you need in the bottom right corner. With each refinement, the cost and amount of materials will increase, but so will the stats.
How Does Essence Work

A later-game upgrading system is to use Essence to change the min-max stats of your gear. This will add an entirely new effect to your weapon, which can provide special boosts. If you check your inventory, you would have collected a few essences randomly through exploration and fighting enemies. To use them up, visit the Artificer NPC in town. You can select the gear from the list on the left and select the essence you wish to use in the bottom right corner.
There are five essences to pick from, and they all offer different effects.
- Essence of Flow — Reroll the value of the selected substat.
- Essence of Growth — Add a random substat.
- Essence of Destruction — Reroll the type of selected substat.
- Essence of Rebirth — Locks one substat and rerolls the others.
- Essence of Chaos — Consumes all remaining potential to trigger a chaotic transformation.
As mentioned above, I wouldn’t recommend getting into this section until you have reached the very end of the game. That way, you will have a solid build, and you will be more aware of the type of modification you want for your gear.
