According to a new Reddit post by leaker xilinjia, players will be able to control and command Kameo characters in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 only for a short period of time.
The leak claims that some of the Kameo characters will be playable through both Kameo roster as well as the main character roster. Essential characters, like Johnny Cage, will be available on both the rosters, however, several Kameo characters will only be available on the Kameo roster. The leaker also stated that recently leaked DLC information regarding Kombat Pack is also accurate.

To some fans, this is good news, as they feel that NetherRealm would be using this technique to gather feedback about the characters players like the most. If the feedback turns out to be positive, it will grant the developer an opportunity to add these crowd-favorite Kameo characters as main playable characters through further DLC/Kombat packs.
Some fans are just happy about the possibility of seeing their favorite fighters return and are looking forward for their new models and redesigns. Others are stating their skepticism about their favorite characters, such as Stryker and Smoke, finally returning to Mortal Kombat 1 but only as Kameo characters.
What exactly are the new Kameo fighters in Mortal Kombat 1?
On the official website, NetherRealm studios have described these Kameo characters as:
Kameo Fighters are a unique roster of partner characters to assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players. These characters are chosen separately from the main roster of fighters.
Meaning, fans might be able to see and gain assistance from their favorite returning characters but might not be able to select all of them as playable main characters. NetherRealm seems to have opted this route to make the gameplay more engaging and online fights more unpredictable.
