Netflix recently released the teaser for The Witcher season 3, much to the delight of fans. However, it was not as well received as the production team might’ve wanted. Fans of the show, while happy that they got to see a glimpse of their favorite characters, were highly dissatisfied with the costume design – a problem that seems to have been carried over from season 2.
The teaser opens with Geralt of Rivia opening a door leading up to a dark alley and then consuming his usual potion to enhance his powers. Then, as he unsheathes his sword to face a mysterious opponent, he claims:
“Now, for the first time, I understand real fear.”
The trailer also features Ciri being chased by the Wild Hunt or Wraiths of Mörhogg, Yennefer fighting against a formidable foe, and several new characters.
However, two main scenes featuring Yennefer seem to have caught fans’ eyes, and for bad reason. Fans are upset at the low-effort costume design for the series and the repetition of clothes from season 1 – which is the only season that, according to them, had commendable costume design.

Amidst all the light-hearted hilarious tweets, many fans also called for the firing of Lucinda Wright – the costume designer for The Witcher season 2 and 3. Tim Aslam was responsible for the costume design in season 1 of the show and was responsible for Yennefer’s iconic black dress, which seems to have been used in S3 as well.

To join the Witcher costume discourse: I know Tim Aslam's costumes were controversial when the first season came out. (Which was, back then, in my opinion, simply due to the fact that they didn't look like GoT) But at least they were a statement. They made you FEEL something.

I'm all for recycling costumes when it makes sense for a character (mailing contemporary shows, or super high realism shows) but reusing a costume from s1 on the witcher??? FOR YENNEFER???

The Witcher season 3: What do we know so far?
The teaser did not reveal much about the plot of The Witcher season 3. However, it did reveal that S3 would be released in two parts, with volume 1 releasing on June 29, and volume 2 on July 27.

As for the cast of the show, Henry Cavill will return as Geralt of Rivia for the last time, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role season 4 onwards. Anya Chalotra and Freya Allen will return as Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri, respectively. Joey Batey will also reprise his role as Jaskier. New additions to the cast include:

- Hugh Skinner as Prince Radovid
- Christelle Elwin as Mistle
- Meng’er Zhang as Milva
- Safiyya Ingar as Keira Metz

Netflix’s official description of season 3 reads:
“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.”
It further reads:
“Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers. Instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.”
Given that season 2 followed the story of the first novel from Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher saga, it is reasonable to assume that the plot of season 3 will be based on the second book, Time of Contempt.
Season 2 ended with the identity of The White Flame being revealed, Voleth Meir escaping to her home world, Ciri bringing herself – as well as Geralt and Yennefer – back to Kaer Morhen, and Yennefer regaining her powers. Ciri was also revealed to be a descendant of Elves and possibly the harbinger of the apocalypse, which means every kingdom in the Continent is now hunting for her.
