Summer has finally settled as August rushes in to bring the much-needed rain to quell the heat of the season. With beautiful hydrangeas blooming, the 2023 anime season for August has a relatively milder pace than what was seen in a busy July.
While the biggest releases of the year that have started in July continue in August, it’s time to look into the hottest and latest anime movies and TV shows that are coming out this month. From releases like the second part of The Seven Deadly Sins movie to Baki Hanma season 2, here are the new shows that viewers need to look out for this month.
Sand Land, Baki Hanma season 2 part 2, and other anime movies and TV show releases of August 2023
Odekake Kozame (August 1)
Directed by Marina Maki and produced by ENGI, Odekake Kozame is targeted towards children as it takes them on a nostalgic journey. The story centers around a baby shark and his everyday adventures as the story seems in the company of a little girl named Aoi-chan, or Aoi. Together, they meet up several new people and befriend them, including Kaeru-chan (a frog), Pain-san (a masked child), Wataru-kun (a human), Kosaku-kun (a human), Kaijuu-san (a cute monster like creature), and many more.
Shin Jigen! Crayon Shin-chan The Movie Chōnōryoku Dai Kessen: Tobetobe Temakizushi (August 4)

From the house of Shirogumi Inc., Shin Jigen! Crayon Shin-chan The Movie Chōnōryoku Dai Kessen: Tobetobe Temakizushi is directed by Hitoshi Ōne. The film is the 31st instalment in the fan-favorite franchise. An interesting fact about the movie is its unique animation, which will be done in the 3DCG format. As for the plot of the movie, like every other Shinchan movie, this one will also see the titular protagonist gaining powers as he goes through another adventure on his own.

The two-part movie The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh comprises of the third and fourth movie instalment in the franchise. As such, the events of the first film, which was released on December 20, 2022, will continue in the second movie. The first film followed the events following the Kingdom of Liones’ win against the Demon Clan. Tristan, the son of Meliodas and Elizabeth, is unable to control his Demon and Goddess Clan powers. As his mother’s health deteriorates, he goes on a journey to retrieve Deathpierce, a former Holy Knight. Part 2 will continue seeing Tristan trying to achieve his goal. The film is animated at Alfred Imageworks and Marvy Jack under the direction of Noriyuki Abe and Bob Shirahata.
Kyōkai Senki: Kyokkō no Sōki (August 10)
Directed by Masami Ōbari at Sunrise Beyond animation studio, Amain Warrior at the Borderline, or Kyōkai Senki: Kyokkō no Sōki, focuses on the after-effects of the Boundary War in 2061. Amidst the socio-political, Amō Shiiba discovers an abandoned AMAIM, Kenbu, and a rogue AI called Gai. With the help of these two, Amō takes the chance to change the course of history.
Sand Land (August 18)

A collaboration between animation studios Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima, Sand Land will see a dystopian world where the supplies of natural water have been dried up. As the king capitalizes on the personal water supply, Sheriff Rao approaches the monarch to find a new solution to get water. However, after he faces rejection, he sets out on a journey with Beelzebub and his friend Thief. Soon, the king tries to eradicate the threats by sending his troops, which the group manages to hold off against, but the aftermath isn’t as pretty as one would have thought. Thus, the entire story, made under the direction of Toshihisa Yokoshima, has a socio-political theme.

Produced by TMS Entertainment and directed by Toshiki Hirano, part 2 of Baki Hanma season 2 will focus on The Father VS Son Saga. Having fought several fighters from all across the globe and perfecting his fighting techniques, this Netflix show will now see the most anticipated battle between protagonist Baki Hanma and his father, Yuujirou Hanma.
