Metal Gear Solid Delta is a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and The Boss is one of the key characters in the game. She not only played a crucial role in this iteration of the game, but her decisions will also influence the story in the future.
There was one particular decision in Metal Gear Solid Delta that can be confusing, where the Boss betrayed the United States, which ultimately led to her death at the hands of The Big Boss. However, the Boss’s betrayal is more complex, as there are contextual reasons surrounding her actions. Additionally, her death is also part of a huge plan that was orchestrated in the game, but it can be confusing for the players.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Why Did The Boss Betray The US

The Boss’s betrayal of the US was part of a plan where she worked as a double agent and acted in a way where she was helping the Soviet Union. However, her ultimate goal was to infiltrate the Volgin ranks and thereby get hold of the Philosopher’s Legacy and bring it back to the US. In case you aren’t aware, the Philosopher’s Legacy is about one hundred billion dollars, and it was collected by China, the United States, and the Soviet Union.
The mission would have been fine, but an unexpected incident happened, where the Volgin launched the Davy Crockett nuclear missile. This led to The Boss being labeled as a Traitor, and she was forced to die in the hands of Naked Snake. If anyone would have known that she only infiltrated the Soviet Union as a plan from the US, then the country would be blamed for the nuke.
This death was necessary so that peace could be maintained between the US and the rest of the world. As such, even though the Boss betrayed the US and was eventually killed, she wasn’t a traitor by any means. She ultimately served the Government’s interests and was ready to be branded as a traitor and selfish, just to save her country. She was a loyal patriot who ended up sacrificing her life and honor for the greater good of the US.
Who Is The Boss in Metal Gear Solid Delta

The Boss, also known as The Joy, was an American Soldier who played a crucial role in finding the Cobra Unit. She was also the mother to Ocelot and a mentor figure to Naked Snake, also known as Big Boss. During World War II, she led the Cobra Unit and helped the US to gain victory in the Battle of Normandy. She was also asked to infiltrate the Manhattan Project and assassinate a particular scientist who was suspected as a German spy.
Since the remake is following the same story, during the events of the game, she was contacted by Volgin, the main antagonist of the story. This was part of a large-scale operation by the US to retrieve the Philosopher’s Legacy. During this mission, she was given access to two nuclear warheads that she was supposed to hand over to Volgin. However, Volgin acted on a whim and ended up firing a nuclear warhead, which destroyed the Sokolov’s Design Bureau.
While this happened, a plane was caught on radar, which happened to be from the US. This led to chaos around the world, with the US being blamed for starting a nuclear war. In order to maintain peace, The Boss had to sacrifice her life. She was killed by Naked Snake, but before her death, she revealed her mission information to Snake.
Naked Snake was given the title of Big Boss, but he refused that title because of the way the US Government betrayed his mentor. Additionally, even though she died being labeled a traitor, the epitaph on her grave read, “In memory of a patriot who saved the world.”
What Is The Volgin Unit That The Boss Joins in Metal Gear Solid Delta?

The Boss’s actions and her death are directly related to a man named Yevgeny Borisovich Volgin. He was a Soviet GRU Colonel and was influential in overthrowing Nikita Khruschev after joining hands with Brehznev faction. He received a lot of funding from the Philosopher’s Legacy, which helped in developing a fortress at Groznyj Grad. He also specialized in using electric attacks.
After the events of Operation Snake Eater, which revolves around the events of the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, his body was burned. The Boss would have been happy to know that her mission ended with the unit she infiltrated being destroyed.
