Lionsgate, distributor of the highly successful John Wick franchise, has stated that it is interested in making a big budget AAA game based on those movies.
Renowned worldwide and grossing more than $1 billion, the series has been one of the most successful film franchises of the decade. After Keanu Reeves announced that he won’t be returning to play the titular character, Lionsgate’s idea of turning this highly acclaimed franchise into a shooter action RPG seems extremely feasible.
During the earnings call of Lionsgate, the CEO Jon Feltheimer claimed that they are discussing proposals for a John Wick game. He also said,
“We believe there is a big AAA game to be made out of John Wick.”
The gun-slinging, hair-triggered assassin would certainly make an awesome video game character. The story of this franchise also makes for a pretty good drama, with enough space for over-the-top action sequences as well as the possibility to include some tactical puzzles and stealth operations.
There have been a couple of games based on the franchise in the past, such as 2017’s first-person shooter game called John Wick chronicles for VR, as well as 2019’s strategy game called John Wick Hex. However, there have been no AAA John Wick games so far.
The Lionsgate team is dedicated to continuing building, as they call it, a John Wick universe after the actor’s retirement announcement in 2023. They are already working on a couple of spin-off projects, including a movie and a TV show. Their desire to enter the video gaming space has been there for a long time. John Wick 4’s success, the fact that it grossed more than the third movie, which is really difficult for any franchise, seems to have given them increased confidence to explore new avenues.
The distributor is still discussing the possibility of making this game and fielding proposals from video game developers.
