Shift At Midnight can throw a challenge at you at any time if you let a doppelganger get away. The main challenge is to figure out what kind of monster is hunting you so that you can counter it and keep living. During my time playing, I figured that knowing what kind of monster I’m facing improves my survival chances, as I had a plan for each scenario.
If you’ve been struggling to deal with the threats, the mistake isn’t yours. Every monster in Shift At Midnight has its weaknesses, and I will share how to use them to your advantage.
Every Monster Type in Shift At Midnight and Their Counter

At the time of writing, I’ve found only four types of enemies in Shift At Midnight, and each have their drawbacks. The eight types are as follows:
- Doppelgangers: Imperfect copies of their human counterpart.
- Skinwalkers (Type of Doppelgangers): Perfect copies of humans in the world.
- Aisle Lurker (Type of Doppelgangers): Tall, slender doppelgangers that look like a storekeeper.
- Demented: Attacks you if you don’t look at them.
- Marionette: Monster in a wind-up box.
- Static Entity: Invisible threat that lurks around the shop.
- Shrieking Doll: Crawlers that scream to attract hunters towards you.
- Stalker: These monsters rely on sound to find you.
- Hunter: This type will react to the slightest of movements.
- Brute: They have a high health pool.
- Pack: Multiple smaller monsters attacking together.
Since every monster has its own pattern, you’ll have to adjust accordingly. For instance, Stalkers rely on sound, so be sure to make less noise. Here’s what you should be doing with each type of monster:
| Monster Type | What Makes Them Dangerous | How To Beat |
|---|---|---|
| Doppelgangers | If you don’t realise they’re fake, it could start a hunt. | Notice physical differences with their IDs. If they’re identical, they could be a Skinwalker. |
| Skinwalkers | Their physical appearance is perfect to human, only way to figure them out is to watch out for lies. | Pay attention to the narrative, and check the notice board. Also, cross-check everything they say to you. |
| Aisle Lurker | Stand in the aisle (where you need to be for customers) and attack you immediately if you get close or try to restock shelves. | Always keep your gun handy, and shoot them at sight. There’s no bypass to them. |
| Demented | They stalk you and attack when you’re not looking at them. | Keep looking at them, set up traps accordingly, and lure them towards you. Attack them immediately once cornered. |
| Marionette | If you don’t reset the wind-up box, they’ll attack you. Them appearing during hunts makes them dangerous. | Dispose of them with careful coordination or planning. |
| Static Entity | They can disrupt the shop’s electricity. | Watch out for radio statics and light flickers. In such a case, be prepared to check the circuit breaker and fix the electricity. They don’t attack you directly. |
| Shrieking Doll | If a stalker is nearby, their screaming can attract them towards you. | Use your gun to kill them. |
| Stalker | Uses sound to locate and hunt you down. | Crouch walking and staying silent on the mic is recommended. However, you can lure them towards a trap by making sound cues as your weapon. |
| Hunter | Reacts to any kind of movement. | These enemies aren’t very strict when it comes to sound, but will attack you if they see you. Thus, you should be using vents spread across the map to survive. |
| Brute | Resistance to damage. | Their high health and damage make it difficult to take down. The only way to make it out alive is to use a shotgun and clever trap placement. |
| Packs | Their group presence. | These enemies travel together, and it can get overwhelming to deal with. Make sure to seal entrances and use stun mines as traps during this situation. |
While you’ve learnt to deal with the monsters in Shift At Midnight, it’s best to try to avoid a combat situation. In my gameplay experience, I’ve seen hunts happening less if I spot doppelgangers correctly. I’d advise you to do the same, because during the late game, these kinds of encounters make your survival tough.
