Coming across a quest about love is a typical storyline in RPGs, whether through environmental storytelling or a fully fledged voice-acted side quest. In some cases, it leads to a happy ending, and in others, not so much. In Phantom Blade Zero, you will come across a side quest about love between two people; one is dead, and the other one is alive. It does play out like the one side quest in The Witcher 3, which is about the same love between two people. Here, the task is very simple, with no high-octane boss or enemy encounter; the quest itself is short, and the story here is pretty sweet.
In this guide, I will walk you through the A Puppet’s Wooden Heart side quest in Phantom Blade Zero. I will recommend completing the quest, as the reward at the end is worth your time investment.
A Puppet’s Wooden Heart quest
Just like the Festering Secret Side Quest in Weeping Creek Valley, A Puppet’s Wooden Heart is also a hidden side quest in Phantom Blade Zero. The chances of you missing out are very high; I recommend completing it first before moving on to the next phase of the game.
Starting the Quest – Talk to the Songstress Puppet
Travel to the Temple of Blue Fireflies bell in the Village of Lu; near the bell area, you will find a Songstress puppet, a woman in a white dress, singing in the area. After she is done singing, interact with her to get a request to deliver the letter to Pei for her. You will get the option to: Take the Letter or Leave; choose the first option to start the A Puppet’s Wooden Heart quest.
Deliver the letter to Pei
Now travel to the Survivor’s Courtyard bell point in the Village of Lu, and head a bit northwest to the marked spot on the map above. In this tiny area, you will find a red statue with a couple of people milling about. The person we are looking for is Pei, who will be sitting on the right side of the red statue. Walk up to Pei, the Wailing Scholar, to hand over the letter from Songstress Puppet. After giving away the letter, Pei will get terrified and run away.
Retrieve the letter from Pei
Soon later, you will find the corpse of Pei next to the bonfire, near the pond marked on the map. Travel to the Engine Giant Remains bell; near the area, you will find a giant water section. Get close to it, and you will see a campfire next to the water. Head up to the spot to find Pei’s corpse lying on the ground. Interact with the corpse to retrieve the Wulin Tales, “Songstress Puppet’s Letter“. The letter tells us about the love Songstress had for Pei and his reluctance towards their relationship.
With the bad news at hand, head back to Songstress Puppet at the Temple of Blue Fireflies. Here, you will find Pei carrying the corpse of Songstress Puppet in his arms.
