Getting yourself a ship and learning how to set sail will be your primary task in the new Crimson Desert DLC. There is a lot to explore out at sea, especially if you are looking around for the new Shark mount. But all this is possible only after you have a ship on you. The steps to unlock your first ship are a bit tedious, as you need to venture out and find a town with a working dock to help you build a ship.
After that, it’s still not smooth sailing, as you need to gather the necessary supplies and also arrange a crew to travel with you into the unknown. If you are a bit lost on where to start, here is a step-by-step guide on finding the right quests to help unlock a ship, how to find the new shipping town, and how to eventually set sail in Crimson Desert.
Getting a Ship in Crimson Desert

Before you can get into shipbuilding in Crimson Desert, you need to unlock your Howling Hill camp by completing Chapter 3 – Homestead. After that, you need to complete all the Greymane faction quests, especially the “Gathered Will” quest under Grounds of the Sunrise to upgrade your camp. If you have completed all this and return to the faction quest logs, you will find a new Faction Quest called “Charting the Unknown” under the Greymane faction.
There are two quests under this questline named “A Wider World” and “Renewed Vitality”. You need to focus more on the Wider World questline, as this will lead you to unlocking your new ship. Following the questline will take you to a town named Vellua, and you need to liberate the town first before you can proceed further.
How to Liberate Vellua

If you check the faction quests for Hernand, you will find a new questline called Vellua Fisherman’s Guild. Under this, select the Beyond the Silent Waves quest and complete the objective Rumor-Ridden Fishing Village. For the quest, you need to investigate the town, save the chief, and get rid of all the enemies and the boss residing here.
The quickest way I found to liberate the town is to find the chief in Vellua and summon my horse. That way, I could quickly carry him out of the area to the marked safe location and avoid taking damage. Then, go back to the town and quickly take care of all the enemies. There will be a few enemies camping out on top of makeshift wooden towers too, and you need to tear down the tower and kill them as well to make it count.
Eventually, clearing out all the enemies will summon the boss, Sir Catfish. Defeat him, then return to the Vellua chief to complete the quest and help him regain control over Vellua.
How to Build a Ship

Upon returning to your camp at Howling Hill, you can now find a new dispatch quest for your comrades. Select any comrade, head over to the Activity tab, and scroll down to find the Vellua – Small Shipbuilding mission under All. Before sending your comrade out on the mission, make sure they have the following resources on them:
- 600 Stone
- 600 Wood
- 1,200 Food
- 10,000 Copper
After dispatching your comrade, you need to wait 12 hours, then check your quest log. You will find Knowledge for the Small Greymane Ship and a new quest named Where the Wind Blows.
How to Set Sail

Head back to Vellua and follow the quest marker to find the Harbor Notice Board. Examine the notice board, then make your way to the next marked location nearby to examine the supplies. You need to speak to comrades near the cart filled with supplies and unlock the Harpoon. If you can’t find your comrades here, make sure you are checking out the place during the daytime.
After that, speak to Ship Manager Hopkins nearby and select the Manage Ship option. This will show you a list of all available ships at your disposal. Right now, you will own the Small Greymane Ship, but you can unlock better ships later in the game. Next, you need to select the Crew option and start adding your best comrades to travel alongside.

Once you are all set, make your way to the pier where your ship is anchored. You can now hop in and interact with the ship’s wheel to set sail, which will unlock a whole new world of possibilities in the Crimson Desert DLC.
