10 Demon Slayer Facts That May Seem Fake But Are True

Like every other animanga series, Demon Slayer is unusually complex and full of rich details that one may have missed at some point. Even if a reader had finished the manga a few years or months ago, they might have forgotten certain details or facts about the series that may seem inconsequential if not given any attention. For example, a certain Hashira, who often likes to maintain a blank expression, smiling upon seeing his favorite food is certainly an unique piece of information. Moreover, it’s fun to recall such moments even if they may or may not hold any value in the long run.

As such, let’s recall or share specific details (for new fans) about Demon Slayer that may seem untrue but are very much canon.

Note: This article contains spoilers from the Demon Slayer manga.

Inosuke and Gyomei Himejima’s connection to Upper Moons and other Demon Slayer facts that you may have missed

1. Yorichii Tusgukini wasn’t a Hashira

Yorichii Tsugukini’s tragic history with romance proved to be a great motivational factor for him to pick up his sword in order to exact revenge on Muzan Kibutsuji. After he joined the Demon Slayer Corps at some point and developed his infamous Sun Breathing Style, he gained the status of a Hashira. However, following Michikatsu’s transformation as a demon and killing several demon slayers, Yorichii came to carry the burden of his brother’s blame. He was stripped of his Hashira title and was sentenced to death. However, the leader of the organization turned his death sentence into banishment, following which Yorichii lived his remaining life as a wandering demon slayer without the Hashira title.

2. Ubuyashiki became the leader of Demon Slayer Corps at the age of four

Kagaya Ubuyashiki, or the current Oyakata of the Demon Slayer Corps, hails from a family of curse-bearers. This is due to their family history of having birthed a pure-blooded demon (Muzan Kibutsuji). In the Demon Slayer manga, it has been mentioned that Kagaya was a victim of time and fate. After witnessing the countless deaths of the organization members, Kagaya’s father committed suicide at the age of 19, leaving behind his wife children. Kagaya’s siblings soon followed the path of death, and thus he eventually inherited the seat of the leader of Demon Slayer Corps at the age of four.

3. Obanai Iguro was the only male to be born in his family in 370 years

Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro in Demon Slayer (Image via Ufotable)

The Serpent Hashira of Demon Slayer Corps had the rotten luck to be born into the Iguro family, which was comprised of abusive female members who made a pact with the Snake Demon to gain wealth. However, in exchange, they had to offer the demon babies as food. To almost many Iguros’ surprise, Obanai was the first boy to be born in 370 years. However, since he was a male and had heterochromia, the demon wished to consume him later, which is why he was imprisoned for a substantial period of his life.

4. Giyu Tomioka smiles whenever he has his favorite dish

In the extra pages of Demon Slayer volume 5, it was revealed that Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka likes simmered salmon with daikon (a kind of Japanese radish). So, despite donning a poker face or serious expression all the time, he would smile a little upon chancing upon his favorite food.

5. Gyomei Himejima used to be the guardian of an Upper Moon Six demon

The Stone Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps had always been a humble man with a heart of gold. When he was a teenager, i.e., before his years as a demon slayer, he used to care for a couple of orphaned children at a temple. Among those kids was Kaigaku, who later went to replace Gyutaro and Daki as Upper Moon Six. Sadly enough, the selfish Kaigaku had a tendency to steal, and after being dismissed from the temple by other kids, he directed a demon to the temple who spared his life in exchange for theirs. Later, after training under a former Thunder Hashira, he came across Upper Moon One, Kokushibo, who offered him blood to turn into a demon after he admitted defeat.

6. Love Breathing developed out of Flame Breathing

The unique Love Breathing Style was developed by Mitsuri Kanroji after training under Kyojuro Rengoku, the former Flame Hashira. Like its name, Love Breathing relies on the emotions of love by the user that helps them to come up with unique abilities and skills. While Mitsuri trained under Kyojuro, it is assumed that she may have been given training in Flame Breathing. However, she altered the composition of her body and the Breathing Style to develop her own.

7. Muichiro Tokito is the only Hashira to kill an Upper Moon in a 1v1

The hype around Demon Slayer season 3 was just as it covered the events of the Swordsmith Village arc and showed the Mist and Love Hashira in their glory. However, the excitement gained the same heat, if not more, as when the climactic battle of the demon slayer against the Upper Moon Six. For Muichiro Tokito, the battle wasn’t easy, but he did single-handedly take down Gyokko, Upper Moon Five, in a 1v1 battle. The battle was exemplary, and although there were some emotional moments, Muichiro cemented his status as a powerful Hashira befitting his name. Moreover, he gained most of his memories back.

8. Inosuke and Doma share a connection in Demon Slayer

Aside from Zenitsu and Kaigaku sharing history, Inosuke and Doma also happen to have a past connection. Although insignificant, it’s an interesting fact. When Inosuke’s mother, Kotoha Hashibira, fled from her abusive in-laws’ home with her infant son, she was sheltered by Doma’s cult. However, when she came to know that Doma, Upper Moon Two, ate its worshippers, she fled from that place. Doma had liked her because he found her presence calming, but that was not reason enough to spare her life. But before she was consumed by Doma, she threw her young son into the river in the hopes that he would survive the fall and live, which he did.

9. The Upper Moon Three demon doesn’t kill women

Akaza, the Upper Moon Three, was different from his colleagues in the sense that he never consumed women. While it was a known fact among demons that the consumption of flesh is not to be discriminated against in order to become strong, Akaza failed to do so. The Upper Moon Three demon refused to kill or eat women as a sign of respect towards Koyuki, his lover from the time he was human. This is also the reason why Doma taunts Akaza because of his personal ideologies, in which the Upper Moon Two doesn’t see a value.

10. Tanjiro’s hanafuda earrings are centuries old

The trademark accessory of the Demon Slayer series is the hanafuda earrings, which was first seen in Tanjiro’s ears. However, the earrings have a long history as they were passed down to the patriarch of the Kamado family over generations. The earrings originally belonged to the Sengoku period warrior Yorichii Tsugikuni, which were gifted to Sumiyoshi Kamado. Centuries later, Tanjiro’s father is assumed to have passed down the same earrings to his eldest son before dying. Thus, the earrings that the protagonist dons belongs to the Sengoku period. The earrings are also the reason why Muzan gets scared when he sees Tanjiro wearing it. This is because the earrings reminded him of Yorichii, who almost killed him at one point.
