Familiar Faces quest in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown DLC lives up to the name by bringing back the people we encountered in the base game from the starting areas. While the quest starts simple, it quickly escalates into a surprise encounter with Matthias and his unusual request to us. Besides Matthias, we will meet Andrew and the rest of Matthias’s groupmates, which brings a strange nostalgia, especially if you completed the base game a long time ago.
This guide is a complete walkthrough of Familiar Faces, where I cover all the quest objectives, all the surprise encounters, and the way to deal with them in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown DLC.
Familiar Faces Full Quest
The quest will bring familiar faces and memorable encounters, which end with a surprise announcement at the end. Here is a brief overview of all the objectives in Familiar Faces:
- Return to Pailune
- Head to Pailune Castle
- Duel Against Matthias
- Return to the Comrades
Return to Pailune

First, we need to head out and make our way back to Pailune. Once in the area, head east of the city to find Andrew, as marked on the map above. Once you begin talking to Andrew, he will mention that Matthias is looking for you. At the end, Andrew will let us know that Matthias is awaiting us at the barracks. After the conversation, the very first objective, “Return to your comrades,” will be completed, rewarding you with Greymane Apprentice Combat Armor.
Head to Pailune Castle

Our second objective is to get to the Pailune Castle, which is located north of our current location, where we met Andrew. Get to the marked spot on the map to find the castle. Before you head inside the castle, make sure you are well prepared for a boss encounter. Matthias is dropping by to say more than just hello; he is well prepared for a fight. This will be the second encounter against Matthias; the very first battle happens during the main game in Chapter 2.
Duel Against Matthias

Make sure you have everything on you before heading inside to start the combat encounter against Matthias. This will mark the second encounter against Matthias in Crimson Desert.
Matthias likes to rely on his trusty sword to do all the talking for him, just like he did on the very first encounter in the game. Unlike the first encounter, he is more agile with his movement and aggressive with his attacks. The entire combat encounter will be filled with nothing but aggressive sword slashes from Matthias; make sure to dodge and block every one of the attacks. You will also spot a faster movement from Matthias, as he likes to dash around the map before striking, so make sure to dodge properly, or you will get caught by his strong sword swings.
He wields a greatsword; it hits hard, but it’s slow in its movement. This is going to be one of the strong advantages for us dealing with Matthias. Every swing takes a few seconds before it lands at your location; make sure to move out of the way once Matthias starts doing follow-up slashes. It’s better to attack Matthias after he is done with his sword combos to prevent taking any return damage.
Once you defeat him, you will get Matthias the Indomitable Knight knowledge, and he will agree to join the Graymane. This will surprise Kliff, but such a strange request can’t be ignored.

Return to the Comrades

After defeating Matthias, get back to the comrades located on the northwest side of the city, as marked on the map. Here you will find a couple of young monks looking for you. Talk to them to learn information about the head monk and T’rukan. T’rukan is back and causing a lot of trouble in the area. We have our next mission, which is to head to the Jijeong Temple to take care of the new problem. After the cutscene with the monks, the quest Familiar Faces will be over.
