Unlocking the Potato Beetle Buggy in the Rot and Ruin Public Test can be a serious upgrade for combat-focused players. It is especially a good ride to have if your playstyle revolves around tanking damage. This new mount has a shotgun-style turret placed on its front that can also charge projectiles and can clear groups of enemies.
It also has the ability to restock ammo by pulverizing corpses, which becomes extremely useful in battle. In this guide, I will explain to you the entire process of getting one.
How to Unlock the Potato Beetle Buggy in the Grounded 2’s Rot and Ruin Update
You first need a Hatchery in Grounded 2, which will already be unlocked if you have been progressing normally, the Potato Beetle Buggy recipe from its Optical Disk, a Potato Beetle Egg, the saddle materials, and finally, a short incubation period. Once the egg is hatched, the buggy is ready to ride with its new combat tools at its disposal.
It’s a fairly straightforward method to get the buggy. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can acquire it:
Make sure you have a hatchery

If you have already unlocked Buggies earlier in Grounded 2, such as the Toe Biter Buggy, or any later mounts, you will already have access to the Hatchery. If not, then progress through the main story until you complete the Optical Disk quest for Snackbar TURBO. After that, you can buy the Hatchery for 500 Raw Science at a Ranger Station Science Shop. Then build it at your base.
Find and insert the Potato Beetle Optical Disk

Locate the specific Optical Disk that is tied to the Potato Beetle Buggy in Grounded 2. It will appear in the Woodpile area. Take it to any Ranger terminal and insert it. This will unlock the Potato Beetle Buggy recipe in your Science Shop.
Purchase the recipe

Open your Science Shop at any Ranger Station to buy the Potato Beetle Buggy unlock. It will cost you 5,000 Raw Science.
Collect a Potato Beetle Egg

After that, head into the areas where Potato Beetles spawn. For me, the Veggie Garden region and its related zones were a good place to start in Grounded 2. In there, defeat Potato Beetles or search their nests for the egg. Carry the egg carefully back to your base. Be careful, as related creatures may get aggressive when you are transporting the egg.
Gather the saddle materials and start the incubation process

Place the Potato Beetle Egg into your Hatchery along with the required saddle materials. The materials are as follows:
- 3x Chrysalis Leather
- 3x Black Ant Parts
- 3x Pinecone Pieces
Confirm the craft, and the incubation will begin. It will roughly take 12 in-game hours to finish.
Claim the Potato Beetle Buggy

Once the timer finishes, you can interact with the Hatchery to claim your buggy. It will spawn near you, inside your base, and will already be saddled and ready to go.
What Can the Potato Beetle Buggy Do in Grounded 2
The Potato Beetle Buggy is a massive upgrade for your riding style, especially when it comes to combat. It has one of the chunkiest health bars I have seen in the game, and offers quite a bit of damage when it comes to melee attacks. Here’s what it’s capable of:
- Shotgun-like turret that helps in taking out enemies at close to mid range.
- Charging projectiles that hit multiple enemies. Good for crowd control.
- Ammo can be refilled by pulverizing enemy corpses, allowing you to be action-ready at all times.
- Standard buggy benefits include fast travel, combat support, and hauling.
That is the complete unlocking process for the Potato Beetle Buggy in Grounded 2. Once you have it, the woodpile and other high-threat areas become manageable to explore, thanks to the massive health bar.
