‘Free the Artist’ is an elaborate quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 revolving around the troubled artist Oskar Fevras, which starts in Act 1 and culminates in Act 3. You first encounter Oskar in the dungeons of the Zentharim Headquarters where you get the option to free him. Once you have freed him you are asked to meet him at Baldur’s Gate for a great reward. This meeting is unlocked only in Act 3 where you can continue the quest.

Where To Find Oskar In Baldur’s Gate 3
In Act 3, you’ll have to head to Lady Jannath’s Estate in the lower city. This estate is owned by Oskar’s bride, Lady Jannath. At the entrance, you’ll encounter a guard named Tarhun Mnemonis who does not entertain the idea of allowing you into the estate but is very easily convinced albeit with an air of caution.
As soon as you enter the estate, you realize that Tarhun’s reluctance to allow passage was not unfounded.

The furniture inside the estate seems far more unwelcoming than the dragon born guarding them. Clearly, not all is fine in the fair lady’s manor. You can try to uncover the reason by using a See Invisibility potion which will unveil the several spectral beings that haunt the estate. Doing so will also make you fight them directly and this can be a tedious and time-consuming process as the poltergeists number in the dozens.
An easier way to traverse the estate is by simply walking through and allowing saving throws to hopefully help you out with the hostile furnishings. Once you’ve made it to the second floor of the estate, you can head to the bedroom to the right where you’ll find Lady Jannath trying to reach out to Oskar who seems to be possessed.
Saving Oskar in Baldur’s Gate 3
As the Free the Artist quest turns into an exorcism of the Baldurian kind, you are given two options. You can either knock Oskar out by non-lethal means or eliminate him which will end the quest immediately. Choosing the first option, of course, allows you to actually save Oskar. Once you’ve knocked out the possessed Oskar, Lady Jannath guides you to his atelier on the top floor which contains a portrait that seems to be the reason behind all this.
At the atelier, you uncover the fact that Oskar was consorting with Mystic Carrion to help him out with some lady trouble. You now have to defeat or help out Carrion which is a quest in itself. Nonetheless, Carrion’s quest in Philgrave’s Manor is the only way to acquire the Torch of Revocation which is required to burn the troublesome portrait.
Dealing with Mystic Carrion

Mystic Carrion can be found at Philgrave’s Mansion to the southeast of the lower city near its entrance. Getting into the mansion can be tricky and involves some Tolkien tactics to gain passage. The entrance to the mansion is blocked off with stone like the dwarves of Moria and the only way to enter is if you have a character with high arcane. This will allow you to pass a saving throw and reveal the mystery at work.
Once the magic on the door is unveiled, you can use the ‘Knock‘ spell to dispel it and unlock the door. The door can also be smashed open by a character with a high enough strength stats and a powerful weapon.
Once you enter the mansion you’ll find that Carrion is a personification of the popular phrase ‘death is only the beginning’. He is just as unpleasant as the beings who used the phrase before him and asking for his help with the Oskar situation will make him offer a proposition of his own.
Carrion demands that you either pay him 3000 golds to acquire the means to remove Oskar’s curse or find his assistant Thrumbo in exchange for it. The latter will open up another exciting quest that involves hunting down jars of Carrion’s ‘personal’ possessions and vanquishing the mummy that seeks to return.
Find Thrumbo

If you choose to proceed with the Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant quest you are tasked to find both Thrumbo and four jars containing Carrion’s organs.
Finding Thrumbo is fairly easy. You need to head to the Heapside Strand waypoint near the Hatch where you’ll find a house with some vines growing down the wall near the entrance.
After you find Thrumbo, you have the choice to either return him to Carrion or side with him and destroy the evil mummy lord. Choosing the first option will essentially end the quest and Carrion will reward you with the Torch of Revocation which can be used to destroy the portrait.
Choosing to kill Carrion though will require you to complete a few more objectives, the first of which is to find the four jars containing his organs.
Find Mystic Carrion’s Jars
To kill Carrion, you need to first make him vulnerable again. This is accomplished by destroying the four jars that contain his organs. These jars are safely stored away in various parts of the city. You’ll need to explore the ruins a bit and fight a bunch of enemies including zombies to uncover them.
Here are the locations of the four jars containing Mystic Carrion’s organs.
Organ | Location |
Lungs | At the mortuary in the graveyard. You can find the jar with the lungs in the Mortuary cellar. |
Brian | Within the ancient lair in the Undercity Ruins. Head to a room to the right as you enter the lair. You can find a dead half-elf and some assorted loot. The jar can be found on the table. |
Liver | Right next to the table with the Brian jar, you can find a gilded chest. You can find the jar with the liver within. |
Heart | In the same room as the Brain and the Liver. Near the table in the corner, you can find a note labeled ‘Funerary Jar Form and Function’. This book contains instructions on how to locate the Mystic Carrion’s heart. |
Find Mystic Carrion’s Heart and Destroy the Mummy Lord
The note guides you to the location of Carrion’s heart which is safely tucked away within his servant Thrumbo. If you feel disgusted at the thought, you share the same feeling as Thrumbo who literally throws up the jar with heart. After all the nausea has subsided, you can assemble all the jars on a ground that is non-flammable and destroy them from a safe distance.

Once the jars are destroyed, Mystic Carrion becomes vulnerable and you can now confront the Mummy Lord. The fight with Mystic Carrion even in his mortal form is still a difficult one and the presence of his servants does not help the situation one bit.
Once you have banished Mystic Carrion and his minions, you can loot all his belongings which include keys to a few chests containing precious loot and of course, the Torch of Revocation which can be found inside a chest in his room. The torch can be used to destroy the Portrait at Lady Jannath’s Estate.
Once Carrion is vanquished Thrumbo finds you to convey his gratitude and rewards you for your valiant effort by offering up a ‘Crypt Lord Ring‘ which has the ability to cast a level 6 summon undead spell.
Final Choices in Baldur’s Gate 3 ‘Free the Artist’ quest

Once you’ve gotten rid of the portrait, you can head back to the bedroom only to find that Oksar’s possession has now manifested into a poltergeist named ‘Echo of Lost Love’. The conversation between the two now reveals the specter to be his old love interest, Kerri. Clearly, there is a lot to unpack here, so you can either just stand by and watch the love story unfold or step in and help the artist out.
If you choose to side with Oskar and help him out with his troubles of spectral love, he’ll reward you with something priceless- ‘Immortality’. He is after all an artist, so this indeed means that he’s going to give you a portrait of your main character. This is probably a good time to reminisce about the many opportunities you had to get rid of Oskar.
