WARDOGS takes you deep into the trenches of warfare, where everything is realistic and making a mistake can be punishing. There are so many ways to screw up a Mortar strike, and losing precious shells for the Mortar in the midst of battle is a position you don’t want to find yourself in. Buckle up because we are about to go all in on Mortars: how to build, how they work, and how you can land accurate strikes with Mortars most of the time without losing shells for nothing in Wardogs.
How to Build Mortars in WARDOGS

You will need a Lv.3 hammer to build a Mortar. You will find the “L81 MORTAR” on the third page of the selection wheel, on the left tile. Once selected, the game will put a bunch of wood planks on the ground in a circle; now you just have to use the hammer until the percentage on the screen reaches 100%.
Tip: If you want to build it faster, keep a sharp eye on the wooden planks on the ground. Some of them will have a yellow cross mark; hit the spot to get a higher percentage boost to make the building process faster. A normal hit on the plank will build 1% or 2% per hit; hitting the yellow cross mark spot will get you 10% instantly.
Once the building process reaches 100%, you will see the Mortar in the pit surrounded by sandbags. If you don’t like the placement of the Mortar, press “V” on the keyboard to dismantle the entire Mortar. Do note that when you dismantle it, you will not get the materials in return.
How to Shoot the Mortar in WARDOGS

Just aim in the direction of the target and fire the Mortar to land a strike on the targeted spot. As you can guess, there are more things that are happening behind the scenes to make the shot accurate, and these are:
Handling: On the left panel, the UI shows Range; on the right, Mil (Elevation of Mortar; the higher the number, the less distance to the Mortar strike). Lastly, at the top, we have a compass. You have the trusty W/A/S/D keys to move the mortar in all four directions. Here, you can use the mouse to zoom in and make the movement more precise.

- First, pick a target on the map, and click the middle mouse button to ping the spot. This will allow you to see the spot on the Mortar’s UI compass. Move the Mortar using the W/A/S/D buttons in the direction of the ping spot.
- Now write down the X and Y coordinates for the target spot and the Mortar location. For this scenario, the
- X is 95.55 for the target spot/ 96.67 for the Mortar location
- Y is 106.36 for the target spot/ 109.11 for the Mortar Location.
- Calculation: Here, we divide both Y and X coordinates and then find the square both to determine the target location.
- For Y coordinate: (106.36 – 109.11) x 100 = 275
- For X coordinate: (95.55-96.67) x100 = 112
- Now find the square root of √(2752 + 1122) = 296.9 to get the actual meters to the target location.
Now use the mortar; set the range as close to 296 or 297 and then fire away.
If you don’t want to open up the calculator every time you want to fire a Mortar strike, then check out the IDF Calculator to help you accurately predict the Mortar Strike location without having to go through the math class. Besides range, the IDF Calculator will give you Bearing Number, Direction, and elevation information on the Mortar Strike.
Should you guess the Strike Spot?
The very first way to shoot the Mortar is just to pick a target on the map and shoot the Mortar as far as possible. The L81 Mortar will have a range of 700 Meters; that’s the furthest strike you will get with the Mortar. Once the Mortar shell lands on the spot, then you can open the map again to spot the hit area.
Now you will have to compare the distance from the hit spot to the actual target spot, and then make a guess by lowering the range on the next Mortar strike to deliver a more accurate shot. This guessing game will eventually land the shell at the right spot, but you will consume a lot of Mortar shells in the process.
