Ever since the super successful release of Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC and PlayStation, fans have been waiting for the game to make its way onto Xbox.
It was earlier this year, around the main release when Larian Studios announced their plans to bring their newest title to Xbox Series X/S. However, it has been tricky for the developers to optimize the game fully on Xbox S, the less powerful version of the console. But now as we move closer to the expected launch dates, Larian Studios has showcased more progress towards the port.
Larian Has Made Steady Improvements Regarding Memory Load Leading To Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox Release
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Larian’s CEO and founder Swen Vincke, the engineering team has been able to reduce the memory loads on Xbox Series S which will help all platforms to further optimise the game. Vincke mentions, “Ensuring memory is well under control and having a buffer for peaks was the main thing holding us back. I think this will benefit all platforms too.”
The post reveals two graphs – Top RAM and Top VRAM, respectively. The chart showcases the peak RAM and VRAM loads on Xbox Series S, while each point represents the changes made over time. It’s visible that the memory loads have dropped significantly over the last few weeks as the peak RAM usage drops below 4.8GB, and VRAM below 2.8GB (from 5.1GB and 3.2GB respectively).
However there still remains a question, Will there be a split screen mode on Series S? It was earlier confirmed that the reason there have been difficulties in porting Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox is mainly the split-screen co-op feature. According to Microsoft’s policy, there can be no feature disparity between the platforms. But Baldur’s Gate 3 later received an exception, essentially meaning Larian may add the split-screen feature on Xbox S post-update, and not on the launch.
On the PC and PlayStation front, Larian has been consistently working on performance updates. The recent Patch 4 update in particular marked several performance improvements. And now, with the recent update from Vincke, Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox is closer than ever, possibly with the split-screen feature present on Series S on launch itself.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is out on Windows, macOS, and PS5.
