Final Fantasy 9 Remake is currently under development at Square Enix, according to Gematsu. The tweet came as a disclaimer under their previous coverage of Final Fantasy 9: Memoria Project, which is a fan-made proof-of-concept demo on Unreal Engine 5, not to be confused with the official remake of the game.
For folks who didn't catch it:
"While Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project is only a fan proof of concept that will not be released as a playable product, Gematsu understands that an actual Final Fantasy IX remake by Square Enix is currently in development."

The huge Nvidia database leak back in 2021 had listed Final Fantasy 9 Remake to be in development. However, since then, there were no leaks or official updates about the title, presumably owing to Square Enix’s current busy schedule with Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Furthermore, the news of Square Enix remaking Final Fantasy 9 was also corroborated by reputed video game journalist Jeff Grubb this week. With Final Fantasy 16 releasing this month and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launch on the distant horizon, we cannot expect to officially hear anything about the FF9 Remake anytime soon. Predictions have been made that this game will not launch at least before late 2024, with some claiming that we’d be lucky if the title launches before 2025.
Some of the netizens are also disappointed as this could easily mean that Square Enix is moving on and not working on a remake of Final Fantasy 8. Admittedly, Final Fantasy 8 wasn’t a big and famous title like Final Fantasy 7 or Final Fantasy 11. However, there are still a lot of people, who grew up playing these games on old-generation consoles, hoping to revisit the titles with better graphics and current-gen capabilities.
