NetherRealm studios has just announced the official launch date for its upcoming title Mortal Kombat 1. The game is set to release on September 19, 2023.
Fans will be able to pre-order the game from tomorrow, May 19 and gain some unique pre-order benefits, such as an exclusive playable character and access to Mortal Kombat 1 Beta that is supposed to start from August 2023.
Confirming several rumors about it being a reboot, the developers have revealed that Mortal Kombat 1 will feature the rebirth of this universe, created by the Fire God, Liu Kang. The storyline is supposed to start from the ushering of a new era, as Liu Kang achieved God status in the last installment, Mortal Kombat 11, and established a new timeline.
Ed Boon had recently tweeted about an upcoming update regarding new Mortal Kombat game, and now we’ve gotten the first look at the game. Fans are hoping to catch a glimpse of the gameplay footage in the upcoming PlayStation showcase on May 24.

The developers also teased that there will be new game modes, exciting new fatalities, and a brand-new fighting system. They stated that gamers who pre-order the title will gain exclusive access to a playable character, Shang Tsung.
While talking about the new game, Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer and creator of Mortal Kombat series said,
“Mortal Kombat 1 marks a new beginning for the franchise and we couldn’t be more excited to share this original storyline and fresh take on classic characters with our fans. We’re also introducing our Kameo Fighter system which brings a unique roster of partner characters into the mix, and we are looking forward to showing this feature as well as more new elements of the game very soon.”
Mortal Kombat 1 – prices and editions
Mortal Kombat 1 is set to release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Steam Store, and Epic Game Store on September 19, 2023. The title will be offered in the following editions and prices:
- The Standard edition is priced at $69.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the Nintendo Switch version will cost $59.99.
- The Premium edition will cost $109.99. This will include an early access to the game, as purchasers of this edition will be able to play the title from September 14, 2023. The premium edition will give gamers the access to a Kombat Pack, which will include a Johnny Cage character skin modelled after the renowned martial artist and movie star, Jean-Claude Van Damme. Holders of the premium edition will also gain an early access to six new playable characters as well as five new Kameo Fighters, all of which will be unlocked after official launch on September 19.
- The Kollector’s edition will cost $249.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is supposed to be a physical-only edition and will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but not on Nintendo Switch. The Kollector’s edition will include all the content from Premium edition and grant the purchaser early game access. Apart from these, Kollectors will avail a 16.5-inch sculpture of Liu Kang, designed by COARSE as well as a unique Liu Kang character skin, three exclusive art prints, a steel case for the game, and 1,450 additional Dragon Krystals i.e., in-game currency.
