Ranking All the Hunting Dog Members in Bungo Stray Dogs

In Bungo Stray Dogs, the Hunting Dogs are a special grade task force under the Japanese government, comprising of five genetically altered ability users who partake in suppression duties and tactical tasks. The influence of these Japanese military unit is far and wide as these five members engage, hunt down, and capture certain users who abuse their power to jeopardize public safety. As such, due to their exceptional mission success rate, they have an audience among international organizations as well. Just like how Ochi Fukuchi was invited to the United Nations’ meeting to deliver a speech on the approval of an anti-terrorist organization.

As for their tasks, when in Bungo Stray Dogs season 4 the Armed Detective Agency members were declared as national terrorists, the Hunting Dogs, or Mad Dogs, were employed to suppress them. Aside from that, the Hunting Dog members are also deployed in solo missions, just like how the leader went to Romania to bring down a situation involving vampirism. Sure, all the five members may seem undefeatable on paper, but they too have their flaws. As a result, this listicle will take the factors related to their strength, ability, intellect, and skill into account and rank them accordingly.

Note: This article contains spoilers from the Bungo Stray Dogs anime and manga.

5. Michizo Tachihara

— daily tachihara (@tachiipics) January 27, 2021

Considered the weakest member of the unit by the Hunting Dog members, Michizo Tachihara is a double agent who is tasked to spy for the Port Mafia and is a member of its Black Lizard battalion. Assumed to have joined the Hunting Dogs sometime following the death of his brother and to find out the person behind it, Tachihara poses a non-ability user when he is in the Port Mafia. However, Tachihara has an ability called Midwinter Memento, or in other words, metal manipulation.

As noted by his colleague Teruko Okura, the ability is useful enough for stealth operations, espionage, and assassination tasks – the result of which may have landed him the job of a spy. A brilliant display of his power was first seen in Bungo Stray Dogs season 4, when he fooled Akiko Yosano and other ADA members using a metal mannequin. Later, during the raid of Sigma’s Sky Casino, Tachihara showed his capability as an ability user by tactfully using it in combat, using metal weapons for offense purposes, opening metal safe boxes, or protecting himself from a bomb attack.

However, as compared to the other members of the Hunting Dogs, his powers are comparatively less enhanced. But that is not a fact to deter him. Yet, when Tachihara realizes the effect of the book and that the ADA members are innocent as he understands his allegiance to Port Mafia, he unofficially leaves Hunting Dogs to fight for Mori Ogai’s intents and purposes.

4. Tetcho Suehiro

— Kyung (@arahyumez) February 15, 2023

Although Tetcho Suehiro often sports a serious face, he is as eccentric as the other Hunting Dog members in Bungo Stray Dogs. This is seen when he eats hard-boiled eggs while peeling off the shell in the middle of a mission or combining similar color-coded food items. Despite his aloof nature, Tetcho has time and again proved his capability as a Hunting Dog member.

The first of this instance was seen while he and his partner, Saigiku Jono, confronted some of the fleeing Armed Detective Agency members. Following Jono’s instructions, Tetcho used his ability, Plum Blossoms in Snow, to extend his sword and cut down the car with ADA members in half. However, his ability is limited as it allows his sabre to extend and bend it at will. As such, his range of attack is vast.

When Port Mafia member Chuuya Nakahara arrived with his helicopter to save the Armed Detective Agency members and flew away, Tetcho was still able to extend his sword to a great range to land a blow. Thus, in terms of physical prowess alone, Tetcho might be the strongest. However, in terms of strategy and intellect, he lacks. As a result, he is considered the brawn in his partnership with Jouno, who is the brain of the group. So, if it weren’t for Jono’s tactical methods, Tetcho may not survive against the strongest Bungo Stray Dogs character in strength alone.

3. Saigiku Jono

Viewers were first introduced to Saigiku Jono in Bungo Stray Dogs season 4 when he met ADA member Osamu Dazai at the race course to arrest him. Although Jono might seem the epitome of nonchalance and calmness, he hides a fierce temper behind his composed mask. While he is not idealistic by nature as much as Kunikida Doppo, he still shows aversion to injustice and interruptions quite intensely.

Jono possesses the ability called Priceless Tears, which may not be of offensive caliber just like partner’s but he makes up for it with his brain. What’s interesting about Jono’s ability is that he can manipulate and disintegrate his body into particles that can easily slip through small spaces like gaps of doors or AC vents, etc. Moreover, he can atomize his body particles so much so that they seem like an afterglow that is resistant to gun or sword attacks.

— daily jouno (@dailysaigiku) February 15, 2023

However, this doesn’t mean that he cannot feel the effects of burn or heat even at the atomic level. This was seen when leader Ochi Fukuchi burned some of his body particles by enhancing his ability. Thus, even when scattered, the particles are connected in some way so as for Jono to feel the effect. On the other hand, since Jono is blind, his other four senses are at a heightened state, so he can hear the ADA’s car from a distance by putting his ears on the ground or hear Tetcho’s breathing.

Moreover, he can base his attacks by sensing his enemies body temperature and other physical conditions like heartbeat, perspiration, muscle sounds to understand their emotions, which he uses as a method for interrogation or manipulation. He is also immune to illusion-related abilities like that of Junichiro Tanizaki’s. As such, even though he may be vulnerable and his lack of physical strength can put him at a disadvantage, Jono can still fare better than his partner by making use of his senses and intellect.

2. Teruko Okura

— ؘ (@dailyteruko) February 16, 2023

The Vice-Captain of the Hunting Dogs and the only female member of the Hunting Dogs appears to be a teenager-like appearance despite being old. Teruko is fearsome, and even though she seems jovial and is weirdly obsessed with Fukuchi, she is known to be the most bloodthirsty member among all.

Just like Jono, she considers herself a ‘Protector of Justice’ and would go at length to even sacrifice her body or inflict violence and pain at the cost of world order and peace. During her confrontation with Sigma, she fiercely went against him despite being heavily injured, proving her resilience and loyalty to her duty. She also possesses superhuman strength.

As for her ability, Gasp of the Soul, it allows her to manipulate the age of herself as well as anybody she touches at will. During Bungo Stray Dogs season 4, to escape out of a tough situation without hurting the customers/civilians inside the Sky Casino, she turned herself into an old lady while transforming Tachihara into a kid.

Later, she tortured a guard by altering his age and even threatening to inflict age-related diseases, suggesting she has the ability to inflict the same. Moreover, in a moment of admiration, Tachihara acknowledged her skill and abilities and how she befits to be the Vice-Captain of the Hunting Dogs in Bungo Stray Dogs.

1. Ochi Fukuchi

— Bungō Stray Dogs FR (@BungoSD_FR) June 1, 2023

The leader of the Hunting Dogs, Ochi Fukuchi, is more than what meets the eye. While he may seem loud and rambunctious, he has a charming personality that can sway the decision of the higher authority with his presence and words – a scene which will be seen next in Bungo Stray Dogs season 5. However, underneath his boastful personality is his Kamui alter ego, which is much darker and more serious. Kamui is the leader of Decay of the Angels, the major proponent of starting terrorism on an international scale.

As for his Mirror Lion ability, it enables the efficiency and power of any weapon he holds by a hundredfold. This will be seen when he would use a discarded piece of a rod from a cruise ship to slice down the vessel. Besides exuding superb human strength, he is efficient in swordsmanship and is able to use swords and sabres with finesse.

An interesting factor about his ability is that it allows his sword or any other weapon he wields, he can change its mass composition, making them feather light or extremely heavy. Moreover, his sword swings are so fast that it is almost undetectable to the eye, as it would be observed by Atsushi Nakajima in Bungo Stray Dogs season 5.

Aside from that, the Captain of the Hunting Dogs also uses a special black-blue katana called Shinto Amenogozen. The greatest weapon in his arsenal, his Mirror Lion ability enhances the time-space ability of the sword to inflict damaging blows on the opponent, even in the past. As such, the possession of this dangerous weapon, combined with his ability, battle experience, acumen, and strategic mind, makes him almost invincible. As of now, he is the greatest threat to humanity and the primary antagonist of Bungo Stray Dogs, so it remains to be seen how the author will seal his fate.
