Larian Studios’ founder & CEO Swen Vincke has recently posted a tweet that hints towards the studio’s next big project. While issuing a call-to-action for the fans to vote for Baldur’s Gate 3 for The Game Awards, Vincke stated that the studio’s next project will ‘push many boundaries’.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is definitely one of the biggest games of 2023. It has amassed widespread acclaim, from critics and players alike. The game has received a whopping eight nominations for this year’s The Game Awards, including Best RPG, Best Game Direction, and Game of the Year.
Vincke expressed his appreciation towards the game’s massive fanbase, claiming that ‘seeing out little niche RPG make such waves is very motivating’. He then goes on to talk about the Larian Studios’ next big game. While he doesn’t (and understandably can’t) talk about what the project in question might be, he assures fans that the immense success of BG3 has compelled the developers to ‘push many boundaries’.
Fans have immediately started to speculate what Larian Studios’ next game might be. A great deal of players are desperately waiting for a DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3, or even a small expansion that could offer some side quests or alternate endings. However, it is clear from the tweet that Vincke is talking about a whole new title.
Larian’s Next Big Game Could Be Divinity: Original Sin 2 Sequel
There’s a case to be made that this next big title could be the next installment of The Divinity: Original Sin franchise. Before BG3 released, Vincke had talked about the possibility of a Divinity: Original Sin 2 sequel. According to him, ‘It’s (Divinity: Original Sin’s) our own universe we built, so we are definitely going to get back there at some point.’ He further claimed that the studio is thinking about going back to developing a new title set in Divinity’s universe after BG3 releases.
While talking to IGN about the potential new title in July 2023, Vincke stated that the developers need a break after Baldur’s Gate 3 to ‘refresh ourselves creatively’. With the raging success of BG3, one has to wonder if Larian Studios might double down on their innovative & fresh take on the D&D based RPGs. Furthermore, there have been no rumors or leaks about the possibility of the next Divinity installment. Even Vincke hasn’t specified if the studio is indeed focusing on Divinity after BG3.
Fans have all expressed varied reactions to this revelation. Many are still hoping to get some new gameplay for BG3, while others are extremely happy to learn of the possibility of a brand-new title. In any case, a large number of them have expressed their happiness, assuring the developer that they will show up to play any new game Larian Studios might release in the near future.
